Has there ever been a show that flopped hard on Broadway, went back into development and ended up successful? I can't think of one.
Addams Family was revised quite a bit for the tour and has gone on to become a staple in licensing.
Seussical also was heavily revised and has been incredibly successful post-Broadway.
Of course it doesn't hurt that the Addams Family and Seuss brands are much stronger and appeal to a wider age range than the Almost Famous brand.
I’m sure “Merrily” counts as a revised success.
I would add Amélie to that list, though probably to a lesser extent. It got basically a complete rewrite and was very well received in London.
I saw this at the O'Neill Center thought it was better. I actually, still, haven't gotten around to watching the original movie (and somehow I've seen the musical twice now lol), so I can only evaluate this as its own independent work. It was mostly sung through; a lot of the existing rock music was taken out, except Tiny Dancer and Ramble On. Damon was fantastic, and it was nice to see Lola Tung, though I felt that after seeing Solea on Broadway, Tung could not even come close.
Women on the Verge also did well in London, though I don’t know how different it was from the Broadway, which I didn’t see.
I had a great time at it in London. David Yazbek really is a wonderful writer for the theatre. His Full Monty and Scoundrels should really be the Hello, Dolly and How to Succeed of today, with runs of five or six years. Great musical comedies with recognizable American archetypes.
He feels a bit like the Jerry Herman or Lloyd Webber to JRB’s Sondheim.
Thanks for the review, lastmidnights. So, it's sung through and shorter? That's interesting as the book didn't drag for me at all. Did they change the characters at all? I can't imagine Lola as Penny, honestly.
I think if you bring a movie musical to Broadway, it should elevate the original material which it did not in New York. I'm not sure if they would ever bring it back here but perhaps it has a life in regional theater.
