I know that Alex Gibson went on today for SQUIDWARD at the matinee and i was wondering if anyone knows if he’ll be on tonight? I’d love to see him!

He was excellent but I was puzzled by one thing- no tentacles! Very curious as to why that was. Thinking it was his first time on and they either didn't have the full costume for an understudy or hadn't rehearsed it that way .

I saw him tonight and he was phenomenal! This was my first time seeing the show and I've never seen the cartoon, so I didn't find anything puzzling.

He is on again tonight. Will post my thoughts after :)
Now, wait a minute...? You mean a multi-million dollar show sent an understudy out on stage without the costume that is so much a part of his character? ...in words and dance and action?? (I saw the understudy for Patrick the previous week and all that happened was his "starfish hat" fell off) Squidward without his costume sounds like some bs to me...was anyone there?

I went tonight and sad to say that yes Alex as squidward only had 2 legs. Although giving a great performance it really took away from the character and the tap number.
Are there any photos of squidward without half a costume floating around? Curtain Call? That sounds crazy, considering how much they're making each week!

GEEEZZ!!! Thanks Alex and Jorge; aside from the jaw dropping honesty, truth and courageousness of Oprah's acceptance speech at the Golden Globes, this update and photo of Squidward has my jaw dropping again with amazement! I can't believe this happened (first of all once, and then again...) I think the stage manager, costume master, or even the understudy himself....what happened?
They would have even had time to fix this problem for the next day's performance; someone has some 'splaining to do. In this instance, being "Squidward", something smells really fishy.
I'm a huge fan of this show, but that is shocking.
Hey there, Peoples!
Well, after this weekend of amazement..., the MeToo movement; the GGlobe Awards getting "woke", the jaw-dropping and mind-blowing speech by the (soon-to-be-President-Elect-Winfrey)...I still need to know if anyone knows what happened at the Palace this weekend with Squidward and SpongeBob??? (when costume design, its' stage presence and the understudy's willingness to go on stage in a "wig, a tee shirt and slacks" to do the "11:00 clock" showstopping tap dance number, where the actor's costume is 75% - 80% of added character, appreciation and enjoyment of "Squidward"'s big production number? WTF happened? That costume idea has never been seen on Broadway, so incredibly original and technically and "stage-presencely" funny... I still need to find out what went so wrong.... I guess I'll msg Tina Landau and see if she knows...I have tix for 2 more times right now, do I need to ask if Squidward will have his flute and all his happily tangled legs before I go? (I'd love to see Alex Gibson too; understudies are the backbone of Broadway; I hope this was not his fault).

Ethan is incredible, obviously, but does anybody know if he has any scheduled vacations? I'd really like to see Curtis go on.

I was at the matinee on Saturday and while Gibson was very good (his smile at the end of the tap number was infectious), I missed the legs. It was just kinda weird, especially since he walked in the same manner as you would with the legs. I guess they just don't have the legs fit for an understudy.

No scheduled vacations as of now. I also do no know if you have seen this, but here is a video of Curtis singing Not A Simple Sponge at an event.

I loved Alex Gibson in Great Comet (and especially the instagram “Gibby and Reed in the Banquettes.”)
He does have a deep bass voice. How does he sound as Squidward? Gavin Lee’s voice sounds higher.
I bet he’d rock the 4 legged outfit if given one.

Earlier tonight Alex Gibson tweeted, "At the moment only two but my puppet legs and shoes should be arriving any day now so hopefully very soon it will be all four!"
So that answers the question. Seems a bit odd that these weren't ready ahead of time knowing he'd be covering the role, but here we are.

I was at the matinee today (shockingly great show, BTW and Ethan should be a shoe in for the Tony, what a spectacular committed performance) and he still doesn’t have the legs. Is Gavin on vacation? It’s shocking they didn’t take care of this if they knew about it ahead of time and nearly three months into shows it should have been regardless.
Still, he was great and the no legs wasn’t overly distracting and the crowd ate up the tap number.
This is just a big WTF from the producers, director and costume designer. The only excuse that would make any sense would be if Alex hadn't rehearsed in the role in the full costume and wasn't 100% ready.
I also noticed that not only are the back legs missing, but the pants are completely different pants. Interesting to say the least.

Gavin has a chest infection and lost his voice and then threw his back out. So it was unexpected, but surprised they didn’t have a costume for Alex ready.
This is just a huge F-U to the understudy (Alex) himself, the cast, the audience...everybody. I sure hope Gavin gets well soon. For such a huge show, the costumes for the leads are for the most part, a women's jumpsuit, a yellow shirt and suspenders, shorts and beachwear...the one costume everyone is looking forward to seeing is Squidward, and those silly "tap dancing" sea legs.
I'm not saying it's "Phantom" without his mask or "Dolly's" red gown, but c'mon...I will request a refund if Squidward is not in costume upon my 2nd or 3rd visit. They have had plenty of time to fix this.
(And you are right n2nB), Ethan Slater is wiping the floor...the ceiling...the balcony...everywhere...playing SpongeBob. If he doesn't get a Tony for this role it will be "N-y-aaa-N-yaaahh" - not fair at all.
The legs are here!

Whoo-Hoo !
At last, Alex is not a loser! He can't not, not stink! Can we get an instagram pic of Squidward with all his sea-legs? (Thanks Courtney) Alex, you're not a failure! You have plenty of talent! (ps. I hope Gavin is feeling better too, but let Alex go on now and tap tap tap those silly legs) Break all your legs!

At the show now (it's intermission) and Gibson still only has two legs. Strange. Maybe he needed more rehearsal time with the full costume...? Either way, he's giving a great performance, and I can't wait to see I'm Not a Loser in the next act!
