I love how Broadway actors can walk just a couple hundred feet from the stage door and blend into normal New York life. It's fun randomly seeing them on the street, but when they're not at work, they are just living life in New York; they just happen to have a pretty awesome job.

I rode the train back to Astoria once with Aaron Tveit when he was playing Fiyero. If you can't make enough money from WICKED not to ride the subway then I don't know how you ever could.

I read an interview with Sheryl Lee Ralph and she said "We were the toast of Broadway in Dreamgirls but we couldn't get a cab." So there's one actress who wasn't going underground.

A month or so ago, I was on the 1 train and stood right by Jason Robert Brown, who got off at 42, which I'm thinking maybe he was heading to Second Stage, because this was when L5Y was in rehearsal.

I also used to see Max Von Essen in HK all the time when Evita was open.

fwiw, saw Christian Borle a couple of times just walk right thru Times Sq as early as a month back. Nobody noticed. Likewise with Tommy Tune & Constantine Maroulis. I allegedly once crossed paths w Andrea Martin and Sondheim once walked by without my notice. Bottom line, B'way stars are the same as any. People hardly notice!

Of course Broadway stars are the same as any of us. They're human beings to, and guess what? They sweat, they burp, they fart and they go to the bathroom and take a sh!t in the toilet just like the rest of us! But...shhhh! No one's supposed to know that.

Me too.

Also, Samuel L. Jackson takes the subway all the time, and he can certainly afford not to.

I rode the train twice with Alice; she's a quintissential New Yorker. She does have a car that she's very proud of but she's practical - why waste your time in traffic when the train will get you where you want to go faster? I saw a picture of her today on the train to Connecticut for her run in Clybourne Park in New Haven. So sistah has a Metrocard like the rest of us.

Hell, I saw Liev Schreiber on the subway.

I walked behind Patti Lupone for a solid 20 minutes in the Times Square area a couple weeks ago and not even 1 person on the street even stopped or noticed her. Hahaha (Well... besides me but I didn't stop her! haha)

I work in the area also so I pass the Imperial stage door almost on a daily basis and see Mathew Broderick and Michael McGraw just sitting outside ALL the time. 95% of the time no one even notices them or sees them!

"Define "many". According to IBDB she has appeared in eight b'way shows. And notice...LOTS of gaps in between.

People don't get rich, yet alone become a millionare, working on b'way."
----------------------

I was actually looking at this: https://www.broadwayworld.com/people/Alice-Ripley/

Obviously she's done much more than 8 shows.

And of course you can become a millionaire if you're a successful actor on Broadway.

There are a very small minority of actor's that get 'rich' solely from doing b'way. While another poster mentioned Nathan Lane, (if that's true) he is an anomaly, perhaps of a handful. Big Stars can make huge paychecks on b'way. Not those only known to the b'way community. WHEN she gets paid I'm sure he makes good money, but there are many times where she isn't collecting a check at all.

Look at that list again. Riddled with non-b'way gigs. (nothing wrong with that, obviously)

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Dramamama - Poster forgot that Nathan Lane may have started on Broadway but has done movies like "Lion King" and "Birdcage". I believe he was also on a TV series for a short period of time also.

The more I see this thread's title, the more it looks like the title of a play, whose characters are tortured by their everyday existence.

We've seen:
Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean and
Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

...and now there's, Alice Ripley Takes the Subway

The story of a young boy, trapped in the colorless surroundings of his ghetto neighborhood, and oppressed by the constant negativity of his "we're born to this life" family members, who dreams of winning a Nobel prize for his man-in-the-moon marigolds. His hopes are renewed when one day he notices that: Alice Ripley Takes the Subway.

I'm sure many of the posters here who either live in NYC or are in the city often have stories about seeing performers walking around. Off the top of my head I've seen Beth Leavel, Martha Plimpton, Ashley Spencer, Jackie Hoffman, Kate Shindle, Brandi Burkhardt, Kenita Miller and I'm sure many more I didn't even notice. A friend of mine who lives in LA was visiting and we had a two show day during which we saw roughly 13 performers walking on the street. I don't remember all 13 but I know we saw Colin Donnell, Bobby Steggert, Andre Ward, and I don't remember the rest. And then there was the time I saw Michael Rosenbaum and I didn't recognize him because he had hair or the time I thought Roger Bart was someone I used to work with lol

I believe he was also on a TV series for a short period of time also

Voice work and guest starring roles aside I believe Nathan Lane has more than one failed attempt at a TV career under his belt.

""Is she not rich?"

That's the funniest line ever. How do you suspect she would have become rich?"

I know Broadway people make "Peanuts" compared to TV and movies but still make what we would consider pretty good money. My wife was friends with someone in HS that had a lead role on Broadway in the late 90's. She was told by another friend who was close to him that he was getting $10,000 a week. That is close to 1/2 million a year if you stay in the show that long.

I wonder how much of that is "take home" after cost of living in NYC, agents, publicists, teachers, etc
