I saw an interview with Alice Ripley, and she's a Tony winner who takes the subway. Is she not rich, or is she just really down-to-earth? I figured that Broadway stars, especially Tony winners, would take the limo or something.
Working actors in NYC, even Tony winners, typically take the train. It's cheap and the least hassle free way to get home often. Often a successful actor can get car service in their contract for a Broadway run, otherwise they do like the simple folk do.
Often times, taking the subway is A LOT faster then being in a car.
And it's not like people are usually knocking down the doors to get near them, so there's hardly a security issue. I believe she did have a car during the Next to Normal run. For what it's worth, Alan Cumming tweeted a few days ago about people taking pictures of him on the subway.
...pardon me for being slow, but this is a joke, right?
I went to "Next To Normal" with my daughter years ago and she wanted to get her Playbill signed. "Next To Normal" had only been officially open for a few weeks and the line at the stage door was not very big. We actually got to talk to Ms. Ripley for about 10 minutes and she was very nice, she noticed my daughters NYU pin and asked her if she was going there now. Anyway, she left us and started walking by herself and did not get into limo or car service.

When I saw an early preview of Anything Goes, the stage door was fairly large. Sutton was the last one to come out. Even though I was in the middle of the line, I remember seeing her walk down the street after she signed for everyone. Even Joel Grey left with just one other person when he finished the stage door. And that same weekend, I remember walking behind Tony Sheldon, who was by himself, in the middle of times square. To echo what others have said, Broadway actors for the most part liase around the city as anyone else would.
You guys are acting like we're talking about Madonna or Princess Diana. Sutton Foster can walk down the street without getting mobbed. So can Alice Ripley. And I'm sure they do it on a daily basis. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if they even went to the (gasp) grocery store and managed to come out without even being stopped by one person.

I imagine apart from big name actors like Tom Hanks, most actors just use public transport just because its convient and cost effective.

I used to see Will Ferrell on the subway all the time circa 1998.
Also, this thread is ridiculous.
"Is she not rich?"
That's the funniest line ever. How do you suspect she would have become rich?
There is no monetary award with a Tony Award. (Although many have raises attached to nominations.) Leading actors unless they are movie/tv STARS don't make the kind of money that would make them RICH.
No disrespect but actors who make their living off the stage, but even the popular ones, can make their ways on foot and on the train. The majority of the public do not know who they are and most actors are really dressed down and unrecognizable when off stage. Even LuPone and others can meander without fuss.
Midler even talks about walking around, going to movies, and taking the subway with no one making a fuss.
I sat next to her on the 1 once. She was reading Patti Smith's JUST KIDS.
IT WAS THE BEST DAY OF MY LIFE.
Pardon the weird threadjack: I was taking the subway to see "Next to Normal," and I sat next to a well-known, though quirky and far from a household name, actor, who smelled so bad that I've always associated that experience with the show.
(Though I don't associate Alice Ripley with the subway, or with smelling bad.)

Tom Hanks mentioned people on the subway thanking him for coming to New York to do the play.
I agree with Jordan that Alice can probably go to the grocery store without being bothered, unless she spreads half a loaf of bread across the floor.
Namo, I just laughed so hard I had a coughing fit.
"Also, this thread is ridiculous."
Actually, this thread is freakin' FABULOUS.
"How do you suspect she would have become rich?"
Well, she had worked on many Broadway productions for over 20 years, and she's successful. So I just assume that she's a millionaire by now.

Ridiculous. But I do like your idea that she would take the limo.
Namo almost made me pee from laughing. And I know he likes that.
Define "many". According to IBDB she has appeared in eight b'way shows. And notice...LOTS of gaps in between.
People don't get rich, yet alone become a millionare, working on b'way.
I remember going home from school, walking down o take the subway when I turned around and saw the very beautiful Faye Grant right behind me...she was starring in SINGIN' IN THE RAIN as "Lena LaMont" at the time at The Gershwin.

She'll always be Dr. Juliet Parrish to me.

Nathan Lane.

YES! I loved her on "V"!
LOL @ Jordan...yes, she took the subway AND she was (and still is) married to the very well-off Stephen Collins. Who woulda thunk it?
