No, this is someone who saw what the movie gave her.
In the movie, it is implied that April died of AIDS; her suicide is not mentioned.
I agree, Oasis. There were small things in the movie I didn't love, but overall, I think it's great.

While they don't really specify per se, anyone watching it is going to think she died from AIDS.
Interestingly, two friends of mine who did not enjoy the stage version really liked it on film.
As an aside, before the movie started, a woman seated behind me was looking at the pass that features the traditional logo with the various characters. Obviously unfamiliar with the material, she asked her companion, "Is this supposed to be a guy or a girl?"
Then, during the film, she asked, "What is AZT?"
I agree, Emcee. Which really has me even more excited to see the film - this reviewer obviously went in with no expectations, and was blown away.
Can't wait until 10:20 p.m. tomorrow...
Oasis, the point of April's death is that it contributes to the way Roger is characterized; moreso than sadness over his loss, it contributes to his personality a huge sense of guilt. In the movie, you see him helping her use a needle; and then you see her HIV test results. So, I think we're to assume that he feels as though he had a hand in her death, whether she died of illness, or whether she killed herself. The point is that she died, and whether founded or unfounded, Roger thinks it's his fault. It really doesn't matter *how* she died. So, it's okay if people who don't know the story think she died of AIDS. How it happened isn't as important as the consequences.
And - I must say, I'm REALLY interested in what Roger Ebert has to say about the film. I find that I generally agree with his reviews, and I think I read earlier on this thread that he will have a positive review.

appreciate it for what it is, a movie, not the musical on stage. this is the best movie musical ever, it is so beautiful. that's all i can keep saying BEAUTIFUL. I love Mark's filming too.. I love the darkness of the film, how everything's shot.. people around me LOVED the scenes that people here were critical about -- mostly "Santa Fe" which I thought was SO funny and fun. And by the way, my friends and I were probably the youngest in the audience (19-20s) Everyone was older. I saw a woman who said she really liked it and how she hadn't seen it since 97 in theaters.

Good point, Emcee. I am just so used to it being mentioned that she committed suicide. And actually this is part of the point I was discussing above of which clearly I am also guilty of. It is obvious to me that it is missing, but after thinking about it I realize that it is clearly not necessary.

Awesome. This is one of the reviews I was most interested in since I seem to know a lot of people who think their reviews are the tell all of films.
No review on the site yet - just the grade. But - A- sure is nice to see!

Funny that EW lists "Lead Performance" as Anthony and Idina. And Taye, Tracie, Rosario, Jesse, and Adam as supporting. I think they should do a bit of rearranging.
Technically (like, as far as awards go), Adam, Anthony and Rosario are the leads. Everyone else is supporting.

Right. Clearly, Anthony is a lead role and Idina is not.
Technically, when it comes to film awards, it's all about how the film company wants to position people. That and how well one's agent negotiated the contract.

At 79% fresh on rottentomatoes. I love the Des Moines Register's review. . . "Get a job for God's sake, people, and bring back some better songs while you're out."
Oh, ouch!
I can't wait to see the EW review since they gave it an A-

I'm starting to get all breathy and excited.
This must be what it's like when you send your kid off to kindergarten and hope the others don't pick on him and see what a great kid he is. I haven't seen the movie yet...but it makes me happy in my heart when others are seeing how great our show is.
sigh. 30 more hours or so for me.

I have now had it confirmed by several people that RENT sanitizes the gay male relationship but sexualizes the heterosexual and lesbian relationships. Face it, folks, it's a straight man's take on human sexuality, the hotting up only allowed for the hetero's and lesbians. If I were a gay man associated with this movie, I would be asking questions.
