The marketing for this film as been absolutely wonderful, if it isn't a smash we certainly can't blame it on poor marketing, as it appears Sony has put all they can into selling this film.
I think the movie will do well....I just hope it gets the fans who return to see it multiple times like the show did in the beginning (and still does, to some extent).

it's a shame that harry potter just came out, seeing as how it will most likely be at #1 this weekend as well. But then again, RENT is not about the $. Sure, we want it to do well, but the number it ranks at the box office or the reviews will not affect the way I see it. I'm sure thats the case for most fans.
Well I know I'll be there multiple times. I don't really see the box office on this movie in terms of competition with other films, as there are so many good movies to pick from right now. I don't think it's really about "beating" another film as much as it's about proving the relevancy of the material and the quality of the movie itself.
this is slightly random but the clearview cinemas on 62nd and 1st in Manhattan is showing the movie 14 times a day! Definitely in more than one theater. I guess they're expecting it to do well.
I haven't seen the film yet, so I can't share my Adam review...
But, it's been my experience that a lot of people just do NOT want to believe that Adam can act his way out of a paper bag and even if he gave an oscar caliber performance they'd still react negatively towards him.

You seem more concerned about the box office than about the fact that your movie has shamefully marginalized the gay male relationship into the safe, non-sexual category for the purpose of appealing to selectively homophobic conservatives and liberals. And don't tell me that this is how it is in the stage production. You know full well that this movie is both an elaboration and a condensation. Columbus and Sony have apparently chosen to elaborate and sex up the hetero and lesbian aspects but diminish the gay male aspects. I wouldn't tie my sail to this disgrace, Anthony. I feel bad that Anthony has to read such incessant stuff like that 2 days before RENT comes out - like there's nothing better he would like to deal with.
I love that Broadway.com says Rosario "dominates the film." It seems as though people are loving her, and I'm glad. I adored her in this film.

You know what? I'm not gonna lie. Of the eight, he *was* one of the weakest. BUT, being who he's up there with, that by NO MEANS says that he's bad. If he was a wreck, I would say it. I'd make excuses for him, but I would say it. I was so impressed, and so proud. I don't think he's someone who could "act his way out of a paper bag," but I do think he has talent and has potential, and it's absolutely naive, in my opinion, to be unable to recognize that he HAS grown.
Now, I know that what Broadway.com said wasn't scathing, or anything -- they said that he wasn't the best of the group... and it's all relative. But... ugh. He's so, so, so, SO GOOD.
Wow, those are some pretty strong words there... I think I will take you more seriously when you have seen the show or the movie. Do you HONESTLY think that Anthony would be involved in something homophobic? That makes no sense, it's not like he could have worked on this show for 11 years without realizing that it was anti-everything he believes in.
Although I'm personally of a mixed mind on the film, three viewings confirmed if not bolstered my initial suspicion that this could be a commercial breakthrough, particularly since Sony has been very smart with the marketing. Of course, subject matter and other issues are what keep me from making a completely concrete declaration (after all, being in a big city and having seen the film in big cities, the reaction won't necessarily be reflective of that in what is known as the "overlooked" America), but the potential is no doubt there.
holy bejeezus! you've seen the film 3 times already?

I'm hurting Anthony's feelings? Well what about the feelings of gay men who are sick and tired of having their lives warped and misrepresented by straight culture for the purpose of mass homophobic consumption? I don't see you getting concerned about that. RENT is the latest in a line of travesties that sterilize the gay male relationship while at the same time hotting up the lesbian and hetero relationships. I wouldn't want to have this on my CV, Anthony.
art, what exactly do you think you're accomplishing by repeatedly posting the same thing over and over and over again when it is clear that no one agrees with you?
I am sure Anthony has come across bigger A$$es than you in his years in entertainment. But we have to give you props for persistence and staying on message - even if by doing so you undercut whatever point you may be trying to make.
You have an agenda that will not be met unless you, or someone with your identical views, finance, produce, direct, market, cast, and control every aspect of some film - so why don't you do that? Make a film that speaks the message you want to convey. And, then, leave the rest of us alone.
Just curious Art2, what is your view of Brokeback Mountain?
I don't even want to talk to you about this until ***YOU*** have seen the film.
If after that happens you still feel that Collins and Angel are somehow marginalized, I will respond.
But I am personally offended that you would use such strong language about my suppport of this material for the last third of my life. I consider that kind of personal attack to be more than a little disgraceful.
How can people make judgements based on posts on a message board? Wait to see the movie for heavens sakes, then shoot your mouth off, but don't be disrespectful about it.
Aren't the personal attacks that Art2 is invoking grounds for suspension of posting priveleges?
