I think the general public is over these songs. They're SO OVER played.
Will this be nominated for Best musical along with The First Wives Club and Spiderman?

musicsnob, there'll be pork in the treetops in 2010!
(I do like that picture though. . . did you make that yourself?)
It's cute, isn't it? No. Google Images.
Jordan - I'm going with PURE COUNTRY myself!
Unlike Spiderman, it actually had a production, and unlike First Wives Club, it wasn't a disaster.
I could easily see it making a successful, and lucrative, transfer in the near future. If not for this season, then the next one. It's not as if it doesn't have some extremely powerful driving forces behind it.
The resistance on this message board to this musical baffles me. It got pretty great reviews and word of mouth and looks far more interesting than some of the crap being aimed at Broadway. As for Green Day, and the idiotic statement that the public is over their music, they remain one of the most interesting and innovative rock bands in modern music. I think it's a fantastic idea for a musical and I hope we see it this season.

This show is absolutely incredible. Anyone who doubts it will be surprised at how wonderful it is.
The worst part of the production, however, is John Gallagher, Jr..

Really? The reviews I read were not exactly good.

Put it in the Nederlander!
Million Dollar Quartet is in the Nederlander for an April opening.
I'm very much looking forward to this and waking up and seeing the news this morning definitely was a great start to my day. Hope I don't have to wait TOOOO much longer for it in NYC.
I was once excited by this, but that has waned based on the information that has trickled over. But I'm still curious enough to buy a ticket when the news comes out.
Everytime people balk about this show or the like, I think of Jimmy Cagney in "Footlight Parade..."
"Nyah, talking pictures are a fad, see? Nyah! I've produced fifty musical comedies, and I'll produce fifty more!"
Rock musicals are the thing because the music on Broadway represents the music that the composers are immersed in. Jazz... just isn't around that much anymore.

According to you, yes.

Who in this thread that is raging against the show has actually SEEN it? Until you see it, your opinion is irrelevant.
There are tons of people who have hated the album (American Idiot) and then love the show because the music is sung arranged beautifully and somewhat differently from the album.

Your opinion is obsolete?
Irrelevant perhaps. Obsolete? I think not. As my Freshman Lit Prof would say "Son, you'd benefit by making the acquaintance of a dictionary."

Ah yes, you are quite right Joe, thank you. Irrelevant, meaningless, etc.
So who here is running their mouth off without ever having seen the show because they'd rather Gypsy be revived for 92nd time on Broadway?
Is the "pubic" really over their music, Basely Tearful?
I agree with what you said though. It got great reviews. Remember when everyone savaged JERSEY BOYS before it opened? And it ended up being a pretty good show. Although some (ok, most) on BWW won't admit it. Jukebox musicals CAN work; I don't see the point in classifying them all as GOOD VIBRATIONS or LENNON-esque disasters.

WickedRocks - It's NOT a jukebox musical though. I think that's something a lot of people who are badmouthing it don't understand. Green Day wrote American Idiot as a 'rock opera' of sorts. That's why all the songs are in the same order in the show as they are on the album.
To both of your posts -- go back up and reread BLAXX's.
I, too, am waiting for the overwhelming amount of postively raving reviews from the West Coast premiere.

Let's also point out that it got a fairly good review from Isherwood?
American Idiot wasn't my cup of tea, but I think it'd do well off-Broadway.
Well, even thought I'm in their court, I don't think it totally escaped Jukebox Musical territory here.
It may be a collection of songs from a single album (and a few from the enw one) but it tends to fit the base definition of jukebox fare. Though, from what I gather, it uses the through line Green Day establishes in their album, it still, isn't music written specifically for the stage. It's fine to use the music, I have no problem against it, but I don't think it's widely different enough to take it out of jukebox label land. At least Who's Tommy had a film before it reached Broadway. American Idiot didn't. Still, it's one of my most anticipated projects Broadway has going this season.
