I saw Lichty in Iguana, and yes, she was completely out of her depth, but i was still not prepared for the travesty of what she is doing to An American Daughter.
quite simply, and i say this with a ton of respect for all actors, even those struggling to find their footing in a tricky role- but this was quite simply the WORST performance i have seen on a professional stage in the last decade, if ever.
it is simply wild that this person is delusional enough to cast herself in these shows, let alone in this pivotal and well-written role-- Lyssa is a smart, snappy, accomplished woman and Jean Lichty turns her into a dead-behind-the-eyes Moira Rose impersonation. Its like the emperor has no clothes, but we are all pretending and going along with this farce--and by we I mean Sarna Lapine (who understandably seems to have just given up, doing nothing here with this worthwhile script), and actual actors on stage. her singsong cadence, her inability to modulate her tone at all--again, it was bad in Iguana but here shes reading Wasserstein's witty dialogue, to which she is Kryptonite.
Dakin Matthews remains a theater treasure, and Mary Beth Peil is in another criminally small role that she mops the floor with. Montego Glover is nothing special but its hard to judge her performance given her central scene partner (and come to think of it, she does pretty well in two monologues she delivers without Lichty at her side).
theres a decent play here, and so much credit is owed to Wasserstein for writing something so prescient so long ago. it hasnt aged well all around, but it certainy rings true re gender politics. i would love to see a fresh take on this with an actual actress at the helm.
