Pardon me if this has been discussed before. I did a search and didn't find anything.
Just came across this video of Anne Hathaway in an Encores! production of "Carnival" from years back and had no idea it had happened. I know people seem to be divided when it comes to Anne, but I've always thought she was wonderful. She really should do Broadway at some point.
Did anyone here see it or have any memories? How would we feel about her doing more theatre?

She should do Side Show with Lea Michele. That would be awesome for everyone involved!

I saw the production and was disappointed. The book scenes were flat and Stokes gave a very stiff performance. Yeah, he sang beautifully but he didn't even try to act.
I enjoyed the music. That was about it.

I disagree about Stokes. I thought he was exactly right for the character -- dark, volatile, but very tender and wounded underneath. And vocally he was at the peak of his powers.
For Hathaway it was a very good marriage of performer and role. She was a bit unpolished but charming, just like the character. Her voice was a bit limited in terms of color and range, but she sang well enough. It was a winning performance.
I absolutely love the score, though it's not a very woke show, and would be hard to sell as a revival prospect these days.
I actually found the West End recording on YouTube and funny enough, the singer who was Lili is actually very similar to Hathaway: Not the strongest, but does the job done.
I hope at the very least Kennedy Center revives it again in its concert series. I would adore Rachel Zegler as Lili when she's a bit older.

Why wait until she's older? The show starts falling apart if Lili is too old to be believably that naive and innocent.

Agreed about it being disappointing. On paper it looked like it couldn't miss (and it was an incredibly hot ticket), but there was very little energy on-stage the night I saw it.
I didn't see this, but she was great at the Public Theater about 5 years ago in "Grounded".
She was originally supposed to do the Lincoln Center revival of My Fair Lady with Colin Furth. Wish that had come to fruition. It would have been quite the event.

The Company revival as well. Seems producers keep trying to get her to Broadway and it just hasn't happened yet.
Wasn’t she rumored for the recent Cabaret revival revival, too?
Anne Hathaway has been "rumored" for a lot of Broadway productions. It's important to remember that just because someone's name is mentioned in connection with a project doesn't mean they were actually slated to do it. For example, I believe Hathaway said herself that she was never in serious consideration for CABARET.
She did do the early readings of what ended up being the 2010 PROMISES PROMISES revival with Sean Hayes, and probably would have been a lot better than the miscast Kristin Chenoweth, though.

Yes, her name was definitely connected to that, but I believe that may have just been a rumor. With Company and My Fair Lady, I know the producers had at least reached out to her about it. But I have no idea how far along any of those talks got.
I'm given to understand that in Company's case, it was far enough along that only her pregnancy put an end to negotiations.
Hathaway was supposed to play Judy Garland in an adaption of Get Happy on film and on Broadway.

Honestly I would have loved to see her in Company. Lenk just seems so wrong for the role.
I'd also love to see her in Company!

Carnival! Is my favorite musical. I named my dog after Lili. I would love to see Lucy St. Louis play Lili and Evan Ruggiero play Paul. Leslie Margherita would make a great Rosalie. I still haven't figured out who I want for Marco. There was a plan for a Broadway revival after the encores concert with the same cast and an updated book. I think with the right book changes, Carnival could be a great exploration of loss, growing up, disability, and PTSD. Here's hoping the new book would not end with Lili and Paul making out, among other things.
