Posted: 11/16/10 at 2:57pmThe other issue I forsee is that there is simply far too many villains. Compare if you will the first spiderman movie to the second one. The second one has a better pace because they only need to cover one origin story (doc ock) as opposed to two (spiderman and the green goblin). In the case of this show they are thus far going to need TEN origin stories covered so that the casual viewer knows what the hell is going on. So unless this sucker is 6 hours long (at this point that truly would not surprise me) its going to be a dragging mess. Or on the other hand it could become just an endless parade of "blink and you'll miss it" villain cameos.

far too many villains
Yep. That's my concern!
Thank you Eris for the playbook.
p.s. Now that my November 17th seats have been lost to the "delay", I think I'll hold off buying new tickets until there becomes available something like $16.00, full view, Senior Rate or Child Rate seats.

I feel like a terrible comic book geek here, but I was going through my mind trying to think of superhero movies where the villain did NOT have an origin story and were still quality. It seems like the bad guy origin story is a more contemporary sort of invention post-Danny Elfman's Batman with The Joker. Before that, I don't think it was really done.
And how much will the other baddies feature in the show? They could be just giving maybe Swiss Miss and Green Goblin backstories and throw the others in during an epic final battle or something. It's a waste of characters, but that might be the case.

Right, Katurian2. I'm thinking it will be more like (but obviously more seriously played than) the movie of the 60's Adam West Batman, where there's a world of pre-existing bad guys doing bad guy things together.
But it sounds like we'll see the Goblin have a more legitimate arc, since he's been a huge part of the show since we first heard about it. I have no problem at all with there being a couple of numbers showing Spider-Man developing, where he just takes on a whole bunch of bad guys who happen to be characters with deeper histories in the comics. In fact, I think that's really pretty cool. As long as we get one strong, central villain with the Goblin.

Jordan/Snafu-
You folks have been anti-Julie/anti-Spider-Man from the beginning. As a pro-Spidey but somewhat objective dude, I wonder why the strong feelings against the show? Is it a personal issue, or are you just that strongly opinionated about a production that hasn't yet seen the light of day?

Scarywarhol- oo great comparison to the Adam West Batman form! Yeah, maybe he'll off half of them in one musical montage where he 'meets his heroic destiny' of whatever. Thinking like 'Zero to Hero' in the Disney 'Hercules!' haha
Wonder why they went with Green Goblin as the central baddie. I think Venom/Spidey could have had some wicked counterpoint duets or something with their reflecting characters.
Oh, and color me sad that my favorite new Spidey villain- Morlun - still hasn't appeared in the movies or this show. Yes, he's a newbie, but he's just so EPIC!

First off, I seriously think Taymor is over rated. As I have said many times before, she is great at creating tableaux yet is lousy at directing actors and story-lines. Give me one example of something she has done which she tells a concise story filled with emotion. Lion King is Schizophrenic and after the first 10 minutes does nothing but flip from one tableaux to another with some copulating Africans on wires. It was Disney being very careful of it's property that kept the storyline coherent.
Secondly I am sort of turned off (much like the Dark) by the obscene budget of this thing. It matches her ego, I guess. I would have much rather have seen four or five smaller shows mounted for that price.
Do I want the show to fail? Honestly, I couldn't care any less. I don't have anything invested in it. Will I go see it? No. I spent good money on Lion King and was bored crapless. From what I have heard of the music it sounds like typical U-2. From what I know of the mechanics of the flying effects while people suspended over the audience on tracks doing aerial ballet will be impressive for a while won't be enough to hold my interest very long. Am I impressed with the costumes? Not really, they too look schizophrenic. I am sure there were many clashes between Taymor and Aiko and it h
kind of shows in The Green Goblin's get up.
I might be wrong. It might be the hottest ticket i town and sell out for 5 years in advance, making it'd money back in the first six months....snort........................... HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA I crack myself up!

Fair enough. I appreciate the answer.
Now, what is Jordan's beef?

"It bothers me that the budget for this show could fund several really good shows"
A lot of people have made this criticism and I don't really understand it. I'm sure the money that was spent on the original production of Gypsy could have been spent on cancer research. I think you can laugh at the stupidity of the amount of money being spent on this show, or call it irresponsible on behalf of the people spending it. But it's not a realistic or fair criticism of the show itself. And the producers were never going to fund five or six small shows instead.
Besides, it's not like this money is going into thin air. A lot of theatre artists have surely benefited from the enormous amount of work that this show has required and the enormous amount of spending that it has done.

Word is that the Swiss Miss costume is proving too difficult to move in.
Here is a pic of the revised version:
But this is Taymor's real vision:

"post-Danny Elfman's Batman with The Joker. Before that, I don't think it was really done."
Congrats to Danny Elfman. It's not often the composer of the score gets ownership of a film over it's director or producer

haaahaa- Whoops. Major mind fail. Tim Burton!
(Though I have to say Elfman is my more favorite part of the pair)

Posted: 11/17/10 at 9:02amYou couldn't be more wrong. This show has ALL the elements of a major hit. That is, if they can get it all to work.

What elements? No one's seen the book or heard the score. The direction is equally unknown.
It has character recognition and that's pretty much it. And spectacle, but that doesn't make a hit.
I hope it's great, don't get me wrong. I would love for Taymor to create a unique and immersive world like she did for The Lion King. But from what I've seen it looks like very expensive version of a theme park show.
And I'm sorry, but when I see those costumes I just roll my eyes and think how tacky they are.

I have heard alot of the music, seen some of the stunts, seen may of the sets, and heard portions of some scenes.
The elements are indeed there.

If all that is true Bailey, you are clearly involved in the production, so your constant cheerleading for it makes sense. So instead of telling myself and others how we should think/feel about Taymor's latest masturbatory venture, why don't you give us some actual info on the show.

I am not exactly a cheerleader, but I do have some knowledge about the show. What would you like to know?
If you would like a serious back-and-forth, I am all for it. If you are just going to act like an infant, forget it.

Posted: 11/17/10 at 4:10pmIf you have knowledge about the show, why not elaborate on what people are asking about most: the presentation of the villains. Do they all get backstories? How many songs are 'villain songs?'
