It can go ether way, in film, the supporting character goes for supporting role, in theatre, the supporting character can go for ether lead or featured role.
I saw A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder last night and it was funniest show I've seen on Broadway. I think Jefferson Mays and Bryce Pinkham will both get nominated for their performances. Their roles were hilarious and very well executed by them both. It may also get nominations for best score, book and orchestrations (Jonathan Tunick). It's the only new musical I've seen this season, but I saw The Winslow Boy a few months ago, and I'm thinking Roger Rees will get nominated for Leading Actor in a Play, and possibly Alessandro Nivola for Supporting Actor.
I agree that Rocky will be a success and snag lots of nominations, and quite possibly, wins. I can see Margo Seibert (Adrian in Rocky) getting into the best actress field and knocking one of the veterans out (I would put my money on Sutton being snubbed).
The potential for this season is huge - I'm excited to see it all play out. It's amazing how many ORIGINAL scores are coming to Broadway this season!
I agree with GoldenBoy, ROCKY will be this year's feel good musical (must like KINKY BOOTS was last year). Audiences and Tony voters love an underdog. And for those of you who think it is a musical about boxing, it is not, it is (and always has been) a love story. Don't confuse those horrid film sequels with the original story and film.
I saw Beautiful last night & can't stop thinking about it. Jessie Mueller is bound to get a Best Actress nomination & I'm very excited to see what else happens for this show. I think a Best Musical nomination is a definite possibility. Such a feel good show with a lot of heart and dynamic!
So, possible eligible Best Actress in a Musical nominees...
BEST ACTRESS Krysta Rodriguez, First Date Kate Baldwin, Big Fish Mary Bridget Davies, A Night with Janis Joplin Fantasia Barrino, After Midnight (?) Jessie Mueller, Beautiful Kelli O'Hara, The Bridges of Madison County Margo Seibert, Rocky Courtney Reed, Aladdin Idina Menzel, If/Then Michelle Williams, Cabaret Sutton Foster, Violet
WOW! That category is going to be interesting!
I don't know the shows, but would anyone be considered from A Gentleman's Guide..., Soul Doctor, Les Misérables, Bullets Over Broadway, or Holler If You Hear Me (the latter has not announced a cast and has not started, of course)?
Where is Marin Mazzie on your list? There is NO WAY the producers are going to place an actress of her status in the featured actress category. They will reserve those spots for the actresses playing Olive and Eden.
@Bobs3 I mentioned at the end of my list who would/should be considered; I don't know the show. @StickIT Fantasia in Featured might make more sense, I guess, since she's not above the title.
Hard to pick which could possibly be contenders for best musical with some monster shows yet to open. But since it's fun to guess, I'd have to give the home town boy a shot wiht Bullets Over Broadway. Everyone likes After Midnight. The reviews were great for Gentleman's Guide. And Rocky, based on it's success in Germany, must be, at least, pretty good.
Not that it changes anything, but Rocky is not exactly a success in Germany. And even if it were, Tarzan's been running there for six years now and that one was clearly not a hit on Broadway.
But well .. overall I'm VERY excited for the leading lady category, I really cannot predict at all who will take home the Tony. Hm.
I hope ROCKY does well, and runs for years and years, I never wish ill on a project. But you have a strange definition of "fact" - "hope" or "prediction" or "guess" or "supposition" or "dream" or "prayer" or "chance" is it's going to be a winner.
Unless you're a shill for the show.
Words don't deserve that kind of malarkey. They're innocent, neutral, precise, standing for this, describing that, meaning the other, so if you look after them you can build bridges across incomprehension and chaos. But when they get their corners knocked off, they're no good anymore…I don't think writers are sacred, but words are. They deserve respect. If you get the right ones in the right order, you can nudge the world a little.
Holler If Ya Hear Me will be part of the 2014-2015 season, so it will not be game for anything at this year's Tonys. Also, I think it is safe to say that Krysta Rodriguez and Courtney Reed will not be getting nominated.
"There’s nothing quite like the power and the passion of Broadway music. "
After Midnight will be easy to tour and since most of the tony voters are touring producers I cannot see them not thinking about the amount of money the greedy pockets will make without much investment. Like Seriously why would they not nominate a show that will apply to a wide audience and be able to bring heaps of cash??? without having to think of the costs of big sets and the like. And it also has critics liking it witch is really an easy way of justifying why they gave it the TONY
I seriously hope that witness comes to broadway pronto
I was just thinking how odd it is that HOLLER IF YA HEAR ME is opening just after the Tonys. You'd think they'd wanna open a month or so earlier to compete for this years' awards instead of risking being forgotten for next years'.
