Anyone else have a problem with the ending of Into the woods? Its pretty morally disgusting — Page 6

The VonTrapps escaping IS a real-life ending because it actually happened! And IMO the ending to ITW is not bleak...it's not your typical happy ending though. Sure, the characters struggled through loss, but the remaining four had to come together to overcome their troubles, and the songs "No One Is Alone", "Children Will Listen", and the final reprise deliver messages of hope on how to overcome this struggle. Did they deserve it? Well, did the Giants Wife deserve to die? It's up to the audience and the characters to decide what's "right and what's good". And it is smart that Lapine and Sondheim did this (put the ending characters through this) ...it set up their message of hope. The message is so relevant today, and it is one of the reasons the film was made. Rob Marshall said that this is relevant to the 9/11 and post-9/11 generation. Which is why Into the Woods is relevant...the message of hope and how to overcome tragedy.

The one in which Roman Holiday and Annie Hall are considered more satisfying romantic comedies than Fools Gold and Gigli.

It's about, as henrik said, mindfulness. Be mindful of consequences, of the past, of the future, of the world around you. The show comes down harshly on wishes because wishes are so often selfishly and blindly made- they're no different than the Baker's father snatching the beans from Witch's garden. How are we to know, how are we ever to know, when we don't stop and think?
Lessons aren't learned when you get what you want without consequence or effort. You aren't made better and you aren't given knowledge to use for the next time you have to face the woods.
Be mindful of what you say and do for your children's sake. Be mindful of the actions you take for the sake of those in the world you haven't considered. The world is unfathomably big and connected in complicated, unconsidered ways. That is the big theme of Into the Woods. The secondary theme of parents and children is directly tied into that, too. Boiling it down to "careful what you wish for" reduces it to the selfishness the show wants to dispel.
In a world in which the big picture is increasingly neglected, perhaps stories with perfect happy endings are nothing more than opiates.
(except for pornos)

I guess sometimes children won't listen.

There's no point trying to engage in rational conversation with these types. They don't want to listen to you, and they're not going to listen to you.
You see, just by being who you are, you show them up.
Already, at your young age, you have shown yourself to be more knowledgeable, cultured, and cultivated than they are, with better manners (not that anyone could have any worse), and better taste (again, not that anyone .......).
You also express a liking for beautiful things --- an absolute no-no among this set!
Worst of all, you don't mouth the party line around here, or march in lockstep with their totalitarian diktats.
They don't like that. They don't like any of that --- not by a long shot. So they're going to try to tear you down, just for the spiteful satisfaction of it.
That's why trying to use rational arguments with this crew is an absolute waste of time.
Remember, you can't make a leopard change its spots.
Nor, in their case, a viper its venom.

And maybe the porno.

Many people on this thread have delivered "rational arguments"...the majority of this thread has "rational arguments"....so what if someone likes the show?!?! I LOVE it and it does not mean that I am not "cultured" and "cultivated". I appreciate and understand this beautiful show, and I have the right to. Some people just have different tastes, and most to everyone on this thread acknowledged that, but we're trying to make Fantod and anyone else understand what makes this musical so wonderful! The movie comes out tomorrow, and I can't wait for millions of others to experience this masterpiece!

What YOU think makes this musical so wonderful.
Others think this musical is anything but wonderful.
And you're not going to make them think otherwise --- and certainly not by mocking a person's age.
I think this musical is hateful. Ugly, too.
And if you look at it for what it is and what it represents......
It is.

How's about you say how and why you feel that way, like Kad did?

That's why so, so many people here have a problem with him. It's not that he doesn't like certain shows - who cares about whether he does? we all have different tastes - it's that he extends his judgment of the things he doesn't like to everyone who does.
And of course he will rarely explain his position because to write any more than a few sentences is self-indulgent.

Yes, After Eight speaks strictly in absolute terms. Fantod has already -- and rightly -- backpedaled a couple of times in his word choices for this very reason, something After Eight would never do. So, perhaps there is a lesson here for Fantod. And perhaps it's "Careful the things you say."

I look forward to the nice things After Eight will find to say about Sondheim.
Joyeux Noel!

I'll never forget the day when he questioned Michael Bennett's (the poster...not the dead director) morality and character because he spoke intelligently and admiringly about the dark shades of gray in the musical PASSION. I can handle the strange performance art quality to A8...but that went way beyond the pale. I've seen a lot of ugly on this board...but I think that was the ugliest I've ever encountered.

I wouldn't look too hard.
And I hope you'll spend your day in more festive - and rewarding --- pursuits.
Happy Holiday.

The wretchedness, God, the wretchedness
And the suffering, the desperation
Of that poor unhappy creature -
The embarrassment,
Looking at that lonelyness,
Listening to all that self-pity
Posted: 12/24/14 at 12:54pm
YOU think that.
Others think it is absolutely magnificent.
And there is no need in putting down someone's opinion for loving it--- that is certainly not a nice thing to do
I think this musical is a masterpiece. Beautiful, too.
And if you look at it for what it is and for and what it represents......
It is.
