Anything new on "Tea At Five" ?

If anyone recalls, three years ago "Tea At Five" was scheduled to come to Broadway in the Fall, but was canceled when Faye Dunaway was fired after a disastrous tryout in Boston and backstage drama. At the time, Matthew Lombardo promised the show would have a Broadway run at a later date with a new actress in the role - I believe he was thinking Spring 2020. The pandemic hit, throwing Broadway off track for over two years, but now things have seemed to settle. Yet no mention on this play.

Does anyone know if Lombardo still has plans to bring this to B'way, or has he completely given up on this ? Aside from the Dunaway drama, I was really looking forward to this and was hoping we'd here something by now.

Considering he has moved onto another show I HIGHLY doubt it

You can’t tell me that Dunaway is the only person they can get for this role. Bette Midler did “I’ll Eat You Last”, why can’t they find another great actress to step in? The idea that the project died after Faye is odd.

I agree - you would think that they could find another name actress to take the role. I'm disappointed this is dead and buried.

Actually, I take that back. Glenn Close would nail the character. I just doubt the script is good enough to draw her interest.

WOW! That's a very interesting choice. Glenn would be very convincing as Hepburn. I wonder if they ever considered her ?



Maybe the answer would be to stage this off-Broadway in a much smaller house (if a name star isn't available).

Kate Mulgrew did it a while ago. She would draw a crowd off-Broadway. I also think Brenda Blethyn would be good. Maybe even Betty Buckley.

You never know. She’s done some real stinkers recently, both onstage and on screen (on the stage side, I’m mostly thinking of that awful play she did at the Public just a few years ago)

And truthfully a "fine" one character player is often just the thing an actor needs to shine.

As someone pointed out, the play was written 20 years ago and originally starred Kate Mulgrew, who was pretty well known at the time for her role in the new Star Trek series. If it was ever going to go to Broadway, it was then. At this point, a pretty small percentage of people know or care who Katherine Hepburn was. I really don’t think there is much of an audience for this play anymore.

I caught this in Boston right before it opened and remember thinking I was walking into a train wreck....it wasn't. at all. Faye was pretty darn good and the play itself was solid and very entertaining.

I LOOOOVEEEE the idea of Parker Posey doing this. I love the idea of Parker Posey doing anything. She is a favorite

Hepburn was done on "Snatch Game" on RuPaul's Drag Race just a few seasons ago to much acclaim, so I'd say she's def relevant still.
