I know a couple of people in the arts who are pretty staunch Republicans. I'm not sure for me, that the issue is a Red State/Blue State one necessarily in the case of "Avenue Q". (I can't comment on "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" as I haven't seen it.) I'm guessing that if the writers feel as I do, they're trying to express a feeling of disenfranchisement that they've had since George Bush took office. Realistically speaking, people on the left side of things have been treated kind of like second class citizens in the Bush years. You may not agree but, many do feel that way. So, to say "George Bush is only for now" might make one person chuckle, another person angry and a third rejoice. If they rejoice, its because they finally have some comfort in thinking that he won't be here forever. Or maybe they finally feel like someone is listening. Nobody likes to be ignored, I guess.
I don't think its wrong to have this stuff in a show. It seems to be relevant to the audience that has cheered at that line each time I've seen the show. Beyond that, the line has provoked a dialogue. So, I guess it works on more than one level.
As far as Republicans in the arts, they're welcome as far as I'm concerned. It takes all types to make the world spin. If along the way, they want a dialogue or debate, so much the better.
"I feel like DRS and Q there were going for cheap laughs. I mean, it's not even clever, they're dumb rhymes."
As per your opinion. The majority of the audience doesn't think so...
"Do you know what pledge time is, Andrew"? said the PBS Executive.
"Yes", Lloyd Webber replied. "My 50th birthday special must be one program that gets done a lot."
"No", mused the man from PBS heedlessy. "Not so much. Our Stephen Sondheim Carnegie Hall concert. That's a big one."
Spoons, forks and knives seemed suddenly to suspend their motion in horror, all around the table.
"how many people don't have access to decent health care in this country??"
1)socialized healthcare is not part of the Republican belief system
2)this is a question for Hillary Clinton since she screwed it all up
If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.
As usual, Goth HAS to bring in the Clintons as if mentioning the Clintons is the end all be all retort. Clearly, Goth can't defend his President, so he has to deflect. As usual.
And I should think the party of COMPASSIONATE conservatives would want a healthcare system. But, no, the irony of the Republican party is that it serves the wealthy and the corporate side of America. Really now--what WOULD Jesus do?

It's very true. I have problems like this with my father-in-law all the time. Republicans will never get over Clinton. They will hate him till the end of time because he did so many things that they couldn't.
Errico Fan- Just looking at the lines, I'd have to say, no, this is not mean spirited unless you're his mother or you happen to think he's Jesus. The man's not known for his intellectual prowess. (Then again, I do like a good Bush joke.) Updated On: 3/14/05 at 03:52 PM
"And your point? I was pointing out another issue why I wouldn't vote for W."
The point is that you are expecting a Republican to address issues that are not a part of his party's political agenda. And by looking at the broken Social Security system, why should he address Social Healthcare?

It's harmless. Believe me, I've heard worse things come out of Bush Almighty's own mouth about John Kerry et. al.
EF- He (GWB) does seem to have been annointed and declared sacred, I think you'd agree. I remember laughing at Bill Clinton. My guess is that humor has been banned since then.
Reminds me of the Sondheim lyric "Everybody says Don't....Laugh at the King".
Bush jokes work because right now he's 'The Man' and 'The Man' is always the enemy of creative people and outsiders and a cheap and easy joke. It's not like there weren't Clinton jokes when he was in office.
What's entertaining to me is seeing how humorless most conservatives are about themselves and their place in things. It's like they think they're going to be on top and the whole nation's just going to embrace their goodness and thank them for gracing them with their wisdom and guidance. Ehhhhhrrrr ... no, you wanna be the big shots, then you TAKE the big shots. That's the way it works.
"And it's a little disturbing not knowing Goth's sex."
Male.
"Goth once told of how s/he looks a bit like John Cameron Mitchell."
How dull is your life that you can remember something like that?

I've memorized Shakespeare and the entire score to A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC (yes...all of 'Liasons'). Ya think I can't remember an interesting little factoid about everyone's favorite fundamentalist?
"I'm so looking forward to a time when all the Reagan Democrats are dead."
Granted, this should be another thread, but I didn't start it.
"how many people don't have access to decent health care in this country?"
Correct answer: None.
Everyone in this country has ACCESS to healthcare; no one is denied emergency treatment. Only catch is there's a price.
What we don't have (Thank God) is "free" healthcare for everyone. Why do you think the well-heeled from countries with socialized medicine choose to come to the US, and pay for their treatments?
How many people cannot AFFORD healthcare? Another topic entirely, but generally, those who choose other priorities. Personally we pay over $750 per month to cover our family health care expenses. As small business owners, we are not wealthy. It requires budgeting and sacrifice. I wouldn't dream of not having health care insurance. Other plans for an individual for catastrophic coverage start around $150/month in most major metropolitan cities. The more out-of-pocket you're willing to pay, the less the premium.
And there are forms of socialized medicine, between medicaid, medicare, social security, VA hospitals, low-income children's coverage, etc. both on national and state levels.
The system, by far, ain't perfect, but profit's still the best motive for companies to dump billions into research to cure diseases. Goodwill doesn't pay the bills. Socialize medicine and lose quality and cutting-edge research.
I think that Nathan Lanes humor in The Frogs was borderline mean.. I still like him though :)
And the other thing about the Phantom Lady was, Bert, she realized, in the city that never sleeps...
What did she realize, Kitten?
That all the songs she'd listened to, all the love songs, that they were only songs.
What's wrong with that?
Nothing, if you don't believe in them. But she did, you see. She believed in enchanted evenings, and she believed that a small cloud passed overhead and cried down on a flower bed, and she even believed there was breakfast to be had...
Where?
On Pluto. The mysterious, icy wastes of Pluto.
