Ars Nova to take over Barrow Street Theater#1

Incredible news for an incredible company! Starting in June, Ars Nova will be producing their work primarily at the space currently occupied by the Barrow Street Theater.

Anyone else think it’s interesting that Ars Nova announced they’re moving before Barrow Street announces they’re closing? And before Sweeney has officially announced a closing?

And right Sweeney announced a new cast. I wonder if Sweeney could be transferring somewhere else.

Also, is this Barrow the same one as the Barrow Group that has the theater on West 36th St.?

No relation. Barrow Street is literally the street it’s on, but the original title was Greenwich House Theater. It’s only been the Barrow Street Theater since 2003, which I did not know until today.

Considering the Barrow Street Theater isn't so much a theater company as a theater operator. Id say looking at their website 80% of their "shows" were one night only, concerts, stand up performance, or one man shows. Add to that they've only produced 3 original plays in the past 5 years. If I were the owner and I had other companies who actually produce consistent work wanting the space, why would I re-sign with Barrow Street?

this is fine news, and an excellent marriage.

taking over operating the venue does not necessarily mean kicking out a tenant.

@bdn223 your understanding of the achievements of the Barrow Street folks is inaccurate. I don't know whats on their website but you obviously don't know their track record.

Sweeney would be wonderful at Ars Nova's uptown space. I don't find the Barrow Street Theater to be very good as far as a space goes. Bathrooms are weird, the lobby has bad flow, etc. But hey, maybe they'll improve it.

I actually really like the Barrow Street Theatre space. It's one of the few very flexible theatres of its size in NYC that isn't part of a larger company like The Public or Signature. Ars Nova, which regularly transforms its midtown space into unrecognizable configurations, will do great stuff with it.

The actual theater space is fine, but I mean the actual like lobby/bathroom portion just feels very weird and dated. But yeah I'm curious to see what they do with it and whatnot.

Awesome news! With both spaces, hopefully we’ll see even more original work from Ars Nova.

I agree but the Greenwich House uses those areas as well, and the aesthetic is in keeping with its (weird and dated) identity.
