Or how good this staging of the show is...
No intention of seeing it anyway so non starter for us.
We saw Porgy and Bess because of her. As expected, she was out but her understudy was superb.

Mr Roxy is not interested in black people. Or messages. Or ideas.
Funny, I saw Porgy & Bess for the experience and, as expected, she was in and pretty glorious.
I saw her and was bored to tears. So, we all saw something!
"this is really akin to a Hugh Jackman in The Boy From Oz if he'd done the show for three months, won the Tony, then immediately took three months off"
It's really not akin to that at all. This absence is pre-scheduled, we know next to nothing about the show and Audra's role in it, and Audra is not as big of a draw as Jackman. Jackman WAS The Boy from Oz, he was undeniably the headliner and star turn and basically the whole show and the entire reason the show was produced on Broadway. What's Audra's role in this? We don't know. She isn't billed any more prominently than her co-stars.
The entitlement on this thread is ridiculous. The producers knew she wasn't available during that period and still decided to contract her. In order to be fully transparent with the audience, they notified the audience *as soon as the tickets went on sale* that the star was going to be out for three months. Audiences have a choice of whether to see the show before Audra McDonald departs, after she returns, or while she is out. Simple as that. No huffing and puffing necessary. You are not entitled to see her perform and Ms. McDonald and the producers do not have a duty to perform for you.
And as usual, who knows what Mr. Roxy is talking about? Every time I've seen a show with Audra McDonald, not only has she been on, but she has been the most present person on the stage.

It's very simple folks! She will be out for three months. You have been told in advance so if you want to see Audra you can purchase your tickets prior or post her 3 month hiatus. It is a very plain and simple. Audra has been performing all over the country with her concert series. So maybe it was a contractual commitment that she could not get out of. None the less the producers were forth coming with the information. They could have easily kept that information to themselves and cashed in on your $$$.
I am sure the show will be Amazing with such a fabulous cast list and the brilliance of George C. Wolf and Savion Glover. How about we look forward to a new piece and stop moaning and wailing over something that we have no control over. Life Happens and you have no idea why Audra needs to take the time off. I know I will see the show and Audra Mcdonald before her break and maybe you should too. That's my 34 cents on this thread.

The show might be a flop and close before the summer.
To Ray
The few times we went to a show she was in, she was out. Have we seen every single thing she was in NO. Just making a statement. Since we no longer attend like we did, it matters not. I was just making a statement re our previous experience with her. She is very talented and would love to see her in more but that is life.
I'll be performing for a few weeks just to win my seventh Tony!!! After that: Bring on Moon for the Misbegotten for my two week stint and my eighth Tony!!!

What business is it of yours? Do you think she was put on this earth to entertain you at your convenience? I can think of a lot of reasons to spend the summer in bucolic splendor.

Audra is terrible person. Terrible selfish Tony-monger.
3 months ... ? Maybe She's shooting a film?

Well, according to Playbill: "She'll return to the production Sept. 27 and is currently contracted with Shuffle Along through June 11, 2017."
So, she is committed to shuffle through the following June, so this break cuts her out of next season's Tony race entirely. That sort of kills the Tony-mongering theories, no?
Hopefully a film that can win her an Oscar! She already has three out of the four EGOTs.
What does she have an Emmy for?

Well, I'm glad I saw these posts. I got my tickets for next Aprii, hopefully she will be performing that day.
Why complain about Audra's absence before we even know who the temporary replacement is? It'll likely be someone just as high profile as the other names above the title, and I'm really excited to see who it'll be. I'm hoping for LaChanze.
