Rally was absolutely incredible. Really amazing. Excellent speakers- I love how everyone on this side of the fight has a personality and sense of humor. I loved Douglas Carter Beane's Grease 2 comparison.
"...everyone finally shut up, and the audience could enjoy the beginning of the Anatevka Pogram in peace."
The Rally was truely inspiring. So many straight people, gay kids, and gay and straight couples with their children. Many of the speakers were gay couples who have proven they define Marriage with their commiments to each other. 8 years. 10 years. 25 years! And so many references to the children of these couples who took in children that needed happy loving Homes. Shout out to Baby Samson! When Patterson and Bloomberg heard this was gaining momentum they both showed up and delivered powerfull speeches. The cast of HAIR was glorious, Cheyenne was Gospel Funkey, there was a time when a hunk of a Man like that, many a lot less talented, would have hid in the closet for years for a bigger career, Gotta Love that Guy and his BF! Cynthia Nixon also a proud Lesbian in a relationship with children, She is a Saphic Goddess. Every Speaker was terrific, Hyde Pierce the perfect combination of sarcasm and sincerity. And Audra's tribute and singing closed the show. Don't get much better.
We have 34 days to pass this or we wait another year, and who knows, we could have different politicians with less guts in power. Check out the websites and how easy it is to show your support, and tell your loved ones. We can do this.
I'm with Capn Hook ~ who else was on after Beane? I had to leave as he was being announced.
Overall I thought it was great, but... I get that since this is Gavin's baby he wanted to be there for all of it, but perhaps a Saturday when their matinee is at 2 would have been better so that they could have started at 5 instead of almost 40 minutes late. Based on other rallies I've been to, I was surprised they were allowed to go over their allotted time ~ usually the end time is strictly enforced. For those who were able to stay I'm glad it wasn't enforced, but I don't see why they couldn't have started with some of the speakers or even Cheyenne and some of the speakers and then plugged in the Hair people when they were able to get there. As thrilling as it was to be part of the rally, it was very disappointing to have to leave because it had started late.
(And how did Gavin pull off staying longer ~ or did he have to leave early too to get to his own show or else let his understudy go on?)
Understand, I'm not saying this shouldn't have happened at all, but the timing of the event, or at least the schedule of speakers and performances, seemed very not-well-thought-out for something headed by a person in a show that plays at 3 and 7:30 on Sundays.

LIVE THAT LESSON!!!!!!
Thanks PalJoey! I'll check it out when I get home. I hated having to leave, but I had tickets for next to normal at 7:30, and I had no way of knowing how long Beane was going to talk or how many more people were going to go up on stage. I hate that because it was late starting I had to miss Audra's performance.

LIVE THAT LESSON!!!!!!
Gavin would have had to leave early no matter what to get to the theatre by half hour (7:00). It is a shame that it ended late (around 7:30), but it was a great rally with truly inspiring messages and heartfelt performances.
So by ending at 7:30, that means had they started on time it would have been over at 7 (since it was around 5:35 before anything happened). That's really sad that the order of performances and speakers couldn't have been switched with Hair going in the middle so it could have started on time. Seems like the scheduling day and time just wasn't the best possible scenario.
Still, it got a lot of attention, and I'm glad I was able to see what I was. :)
And I agree... It's ridiculous that IOWA of all places passed a similar law before New York!

jordangirl, This whole wonderful Rally was put together in basically 2 weeks! When word got out how much attention it was generating more and more people wanted to be included. It wasn't known for certain that Bloomberg and Patterson would attend, but they did and that added to the length. It was very important to get the Rally up fast because of the short span till the vote. Considering all that, the Rally was extremely well done and got the point out there! Bloomberg and Patterson were on all the Local news stations.
I know it was put together very suddenly. I'm just saying that they KNEW the cast of Hair couldn't be there until well after 5, so planning for them to kick it off wasn't the smartest idea to have it run on schedule if they were sticking with their announced start time of 5pm.
I haven't said I'm not happy they did it or that it was awful. I've just said that scheduling of obvious things like that should be taken into account in the future. If a person or group cannot be there until 5:30, don't schedule them first for something that's to start at 5. That's all. :)

A great big thank you to Mr. Creel, Broadway Impact and everyone who showed up on stage and off.
My partner and I had never been to any sort of a rally before, but had decided this was too important to miss. So we both took time out from our jobs and happily hauled ourselves over to Broadway to show our support. What an amazing evening.
It was comforting and inspiring to see all the people; gay and straight, in support of what is a basic civil right; to love and be loved, and to honor that love in marriage. It was truly beautiful when Mr. Pierce held up his wedding ring clad hand and said, "this ring means so much to me..." This always eloquent, well-spoken gentleman summed up the feelings of myself, my partner and what our life together has meant, does mean, and will mean to us, in just a few sentences. Parts of his speech are linked below.
