Some new Avenue q London clips. Thought id post here aswell as the london board so the Broadway people can see about of a guy playing Gary. From the short clip i think it works pretty well.
I actually loved Gary it seems to work really well as a guy...the rest of the cats fab. def props on the american accents...are they all english though?? What ever happened to the character Job?

I guess the no dialects thing makes sense, since it takes place in NYC?
Any idea if any of the changes will be put into the NYC production? Like the show curtains and whatnot? I really like waht they've done w/ the show, they're "spruced" it up. The logo is quite classy.

1) I really liked the fact that Julie Atherton did not try to do what others did: imitate Stephanie. Her Kate Monster was unique and new, and that was refreshing. Of course, Lucy is an incredibly easy voice, so her's is spot on. 2) Trekkie coming out of the sewer in "Internet is for Porn"...that's new, isn't it? That's much funnier than where he pops up on Broadway (around the set)... 3) Actually, Gary as a guy does work more than I thought so, but I need to see "You Can Be As Loud As the Hell You Want" before I can fully start accepting it...
I really enjoyed it Some of the puppetry seemed a bit sloppy, but they'll refine their skills as the production continues, and (sad as it is) the general public probably won't notice the difference. However, the cast seems to be very enthusiastic and they all delivered the material well. They did use the OBCR at the end of the clip though, I'd recognize John's voice anywhere
Yes the puppets did seem to be larger, but that could also be the camera angle as the puppets have always been larger than normal and the camera was really close. The Nicky/Trekkie guy seemed to be a little off. But Avenue Q is always fun to watch!
Dean: Can I tell you something?
Lorraine: That depends on what it is.
Dean: I think you're really really pretty.
Lorraine: (after a pause) Ok, you can tell me that.
Eh, this video kinda creeps me out. The performers looking directly into the camera...kinda weird.
Not a big fan of the Kate Monster voice. Too...young girl-ish for me. It would get on my nerves, but who knows? It's probably better on stage (and when it's not a 5 second clip).
The fake laughter kinda gets to me too..lol

The canned laughter is horrible and I was suprised to hear the London audiences "ohh and aww" audibly. They just don't. The show looks great though, aside from the big heads and all!
and yes, the heads do look rather large over there, but actually, the ones on broadway are pretty big too (if you go to broadway.yahoo, they have a video of mary faber and rick lyon and they talk about and show the puppets...yeah)
It was good. Thanks, and is this the first male gary colman?

The puppets are not bigger in London. This footage was obviously shot with very wide angle lenses - anytime the camera gets close to something, the proportions get all distorted.
As for the puppetry, I'm sure they're better now - this was shot early on, probably during previews. And remember that none of them had previous puppet experience - which is how they cast the show these days.
The functional manhole is something that we always wanted on Broadway, but couldn't have due to the limitations of the Golden theatre. We were supposed to have it in Vegas, but someone decided at the last minute it would be too expensive and it was cut. Cameron Mackintosh has obviously invested more money on certain aspects of the show in London than in previous productions - like some of the technical things (show curtain, trap door, big video screens), and promoting the show. And the front of house stuff in London - big photos, banners, displays outside the theatre (and in) - are really nice.
Yes, first male Gary Coleman. Personally, I think it's not as whimsical and entertaining as having a woman in the role. http://www.lyonpuppets.com
It's only a short clip so dont look too much into it! But Julie's Kate/Lucy are SPOT ON! I thought the girly voice (which in fact was ACTUALLY Julie's real voice... yeah I know, I was abit surprised as well!) suited Kate really well... Julie GOT the role so much more and had so much more sweetness than Stephanie, needless to say about her singing! And Simon Lipkin/Clare Foster can do no fault as Trekkie/Nicky! On vids, they look bad (like their performances in the opening vid on Broadway.com) but live, they're SO SO SO wonderful! Male Gary works just fine, but of course vocally not as interesting and exciting as a female Gary! But works better than I expected! And yeah, the hole on the board was a pleasant surprise for me and I thought was good! Overall, this cast is very different to the OBC and from video is just not the same! Cuz the cast is just SO gd!

I think the show comes off better than on Broadway. The technical stuff on Broadway doesn't look at good. The set and everything don't seem to "mesh" quite as well as theirs do. Too bad Cameron wouldn't take control of the Broadway Q.
I think that Female Gary would have been to complicated for the Brits - we don't really know who he is - in previews there was briefly an explanatory line about "hey you're former Child star Gary Coleman..." to try and compensate for that.
That video is good, but doesn't give you the real impact of how fabulous they are. Oh and the boys are really cute. Simon Lipkin's Trekkie is hilarious. I laughed until my sides ached. I just wish I could see the NY version.
