The Kimberly Akimbo tour ended it's 2 week run at The National Theatre yesterday. I saw it Thursday evening and absolutely loved it.
I played the lottery 4 times and won one time. Great seat - 8th row center orchestra on the aisle. What puzzles me is that there were a lot of empty seats, yet tickets for this production did not appear on TodayTix and there wasn't a rush policy in place. I tried the lottery again for Sunday, but didn't win. Usually our local NBC station will feature touring shows that play in DC, but I didn't see any publicity for this. If a production isn't selling, why not offer any incentives to buy tickets?
When the tour was here in Los Angeles last October, there were discounted tickets. It could just depend on the venue, and if they want to offer discount tickets. Who knows?
I got last minute tickets in Boston for sixty something bucks, so I think it likely depends on the venue.
Incidentally, I didn't know they'd planned to run for another entire year! I wonder if we'll get a replacement Kim...

If the replacement murmurs are true...who's like her? Damn few.

I saw it too when I won the lottery (on a Tuesday). Lots of empty seats in DC. They should've just done one week, instead of 2 weeks.
I don't think they ever put touring Broadway shows at the National Theater on TodayTix, maybe a contract thing. It's all ticketmaster.
Carolee Carmello as Kimberly was great. Wish I saw it twice.

I agree that the touring production is excellent. In San Francisco, there were discounted tickets for every performance and still some empty seats, even though it played the smaller Curran Theatre (1600 seats) instead of the Orpheum (2200 seats). People are not buying those expensive subscriptions since it is clear that almost every show will offer generous numbers of seriously discounted tickets. Why pay $120-140 for a main floor seat when the same seat will go for $55-65 on discount? Might as well wait for the discount and avoid the weak shows like Mrs.Doubtfire, Girl from the North Country, Back to the Future, Some Like It Hot, and worst of all that awful rewritten Oklahoma that distorted the musical so much that people walked out in droves. Only Wicked, Lion King, Hamilton, Hadestown sold without discounts.Funny Girl, A Beautiful Noise received quality reviews and strong word of mouth, but still had many discounted seats. Kimberly was high quality and deserved to sell a lot better than it did, but at least the theatre was mostly full through discounted tickets.

Any idea how long the current cast sticks around? I'd love to see Carolee in a few months
There is a 3 week layoff after the Greenville stop. I’d suspect there would be cast changes around then.
I thoroughly enjoyed the tour in DC. Was nervous it would get lost in a bigger house, but I fortunately had close seats. Carolee Carmello continues to be a star. She played the role more awkward than Victoria Clark, which I thought suited her well because of her powerhouse voice. What a perfect little show, and I was thrilled to see it again after 3x in Broadway.
