They are "contenders".
What kind of announcement is that?

I agree a non-profit should not be doing BYE BYE BIRDIE. No project is a sure-fire bet, and it hasn't received a revival, but it is a well-known property that could find a commercial audience.
But I couldn't be more thrilled to have a MERRILY - and directed by Lapine!

Oh, I think the Roundabout is fully capable and adept at messing up any musical. Or just about anything, period.

MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG is happening in the spring of next year, directed by James Lapine.
If a revival of BYE BYE BIRDIE makes it onto Roundabout's schedule next season over a revival of SIDE SHOW (which had previously been discussed as the prime candidate to open the Henry Miller's Theater,) it will be a crying shame.

Though I think they could screw up BIRDIE more than MERRILY.
I sadly think the opposite.

Side Show is one of my favorites, but I would much rather see Roundabout do Birdie than this "revised" Side Show monstrosity they have cooking.

- I trust Lapine. And with Sondheim still involved, I do not see how it could be messed up.

Posted: 1/22/09 at 1:16pmI think ANYONE is capable of messing up ANYTHING. The original Merrily had both Sondheim AND Harold Prince involved and look how well that turned out.

Posted: 1/22/09 at 3:10pmBoth Merrily and Bye Bye Birdie should be done by Roundabout. When Bye Bye Birdie is done with original orchestrations as it was done at City Center Encores a few years ago, it holds up quite well and sounds amazingly good on just about every level. It can be revived quite well and it has never had a Broadway revival. Merrily also deserves a chance at Roundabout. They will do a very good job with both of these shows and I hope they actually do them.

The Doyle version was a critical hit, I thought, over in England?
Why aren't we seeing that version?? I've heard nothing but WONDERFUL things about it!

I laughed at how ironic this statement was. It very true!
I think that Birdie could do well for Roundabout. It is a "family" show, and a classic show. Not to put down the Disney shows or anything, but it could give the next generation of theatre lovers its first kick with a great show.
