All right guys, first off let me apologize for starting yet another topic asking for audition help - But I don't have anyone else to ask! I need a good song that I can belt with (I'm a tenor). PLEASE HELP! I know you guys are the best source - so thanks for all of your in-put.

Well, I personally think Not While I'm Around from Sweeney is sort of beltish. :-/

I falsettoed the first A flat and belted the second in "Not While I'm Around" for my auditions... seemed to work well for me. It's a great song.

Lost in the Wilderness takes guts to do, with the now seemingly mandatory "optional riff section" in the bridge.

Also, look at "Oh, Is there Not One Maiden Breast".. B flat at the end.

Look at the old stuff.. Fanny, Mattress.. all that good, classic stuff.

Personally, I think I have too much bloom.

"Run, Freedom, Run" from Urinetown has some high notes in it, and you can belt parts of it.

A lot of the male songs in Hairspray go high, like "Run And Tell That" has Bs and As in it.

Not While I'm Around is a legit, almost classical piece. It's definitely not a piece to belt the notes in. Look @ "Where I Want To Be" or "Anthem" from Chess.

All those suggested are great ideas.

"Wilkommen", from Cabaret, is also a great song for a high male belter.

"A New Argentina" from Evita
"The Lees of Old Virginia" from 1776 (especially if you transpose it up a key or two)
"Dames" from 42nd Street
"Keep it Gay" from The Producers
"Fortune Favors The Brave" from Aida
A lot of stuff from Footloose and Jesus Christ Superstar
"Beethoven Day" from You're a Good Man Charlie Brown
"Pinball Wizard" or "I'm Free" from Tommy

I wouldn't call Not While I'm Around classical or near legit. But things get confusing when we talk about guys and belting... so our terminology may be off. What I meant was I sang it fully in my chest voice, which makes.. quite a large sound.. which is what I consider to belting.

Whatever though.

Personally, I think I have too much bloom.

"Corner in the Sky" from Pippin, High C at the end
"Love Changes Everything", from Aspects of Love B-flat, you can just be big on the whole damn song so go for it!
"Man" and "You Walk with Me" from Full Monty, not sure how high, but its just so energy packed (talking about Man)
"Who am I" - Les Mis
"Dancing Through Life" - Wicked
"Giants in the Sky" - Into the Woods, doesn't go above F sharp, but it's just a good song
"Why God Why" "Bui Doi" - Miss Saigon
Have fun!
...and don't apologize about making an audition post. I think they are some of the better posts, so much of our careers rely on this sort of thing, and for me, I get rep ideas I would have never thought of.

If you can go up to a D, which is pretty high, then PITY THE CHILD from CHESS would be another "belty" tenor song, though the high notes could be sung without shouting them.

I would suggest "Gethsemane" from Jesus Christ Superstar. If you can belt, and really hit those notes, it's an awesome song.

Well i would say everything mentioned above is either overdone or just boring for an audition. Try something different.

"Issue in Question" from Triumph of Love. Excellent song with plenty of character and a nice big high A to finish with.

"Barrett's Song" from Titanic. Now I would say this needs more of a baritone to it but has 3 Gs that can be belted with some force. And again its a nice character arc to work through.

"Proud Lady" from The Baker's Wife. Again ends on around a G/A i think and has a little something to do rather than sing pretty although you really need to be pretty so sing this one! I dont qualify sadly

"Petrified" from Taboo has a nice B natural plus riff! If thats not high belting then what else? re: Belty Tenor Songs

Oh and you can get "Life After Life" in a high key that ends on a B natural too. The chorus sections are all Fs and G#s so perfect to show off on. Wildhorn is def belt material.

And if you are really up for a challenge! "King of the World" from Songs for a New World. However its a bitch to play and act well so maybe one to work on once you are in drama school.

Hope that helps.

What are you auditioning for. I think thats the most important thing to consider. Moreso then belting your brains out (not saying that the audition doesn't call for belting).

"Streets of Dublin" From A Man of No Importance is a perfect tenor song. It is a belty and its fast paced. I sang it for an audtion and people were blown away. It's a lot of fun to sing. It also shows great vocal range.

"Shiksa Goddess" from The Last Five years" is another one and you will probably get a few laughs since it is pretty funny at times, a good song, fun to sing.

"Purpose" from Avenue Q

"Sailing" from A New Brain

"Listen to the song that I sing and trust me..."

i would add maybe "is this what you call love" from Passion OOOH you definately should try "eldorado" from Candide. that would be an example of legit. it's great and makes the he male voice sound fab.

you could do "there are giants in the sky" from into the woods. or "johanna" from sweeney todd. these are akk my favorites. maybe even quiet girl from "Wonderful town"? well good luck!
