You're asking for trouble with this thread haha. I've only seen Patti LuPone's interpretation but I have never been more captivated by a performance. Had I seen Bernadette's I don't think I could make a decision.

Bernadette.
She brought some unexpected warmth and playfulness, which gave the character unexpected sympathy and depth.
Patti plays it as the shrew, which is just too easy for my tastes.
Bernadette. Hands down.
That's a loaded question. I haven't seen Patti yet so I can't compare, but I did see Bernadette and I liked her take on the role.
One element Patti brings to the role, IMO, is a view into the eyes of Rose as a child who never grew up, emotionally. Perhaps never could. I think she does a pretty good job of this. I think that tempers her shrewishness quite a bit actually. There's a certain petulance that she has brought out in Rose. And this actually jibes with the historical information about Rose Hovick.
That written, I'd like to think that there is room to enjoy both Bernadette's and Patti's interpretations.
Why do people have the need to compare them or to pit them against each other? Even more, why do people feel the need to bash one in order to praise the other? Everyone who praises Patti only does it by saying that Bernadette Peters couldn't sing the notes which gets old really fast.
I'm partial to Peters' Rose, but I don't get the point of this thread or the hundreds of threads with the same title/idea.
Why, again?? This op LOVES to start trouble.
but..

Both were wonderful. The performances were also very different. I would love to see one of them one night, and the other the next.
I agree that this is an old topic.
I saw Bernadette for my 18th birthday and did I love her. I loved the show, I loved her, I thought she was wonderful.
I saw Patti on press day at City Center and WOW DID I LOVE HER. I loved the show, I loved her, I thought she was wonderful.
I've said before that I think they made some similar character choices, regarding how human and sexual Rose is. I still think that Patti is a better actress (and vocally handles the role better, but we're not going there) and is aided by that. I think Patti also benefits from having a stronger director and a much stronger supporting cast (as much as I loved John Dossett and Tammy Blanchard). Bernadette was very soft and sensual and human, but I think she lacked that...dynamite quality that Patti has. her Rose's Turn [Bernadette's] was great, but Patti...Patti just explodes.
so, while I really enjoyed Bernadette's Gypsy, I think Patti is the better Rose for me.
Laurents is a better director than Mendes????
What are you smoking?

I can't say anything about their live performances b/c I haven't seen either one (but if I'm lucky, I'll be seeing Patti's in February). Based completely on the performances they gave on the cast recordings, I really do prefer Patti in the role, mostly because of the power in her voice, and how well she acts through only the speakers of my stereo. That said, Bernadette sounds like she's vocally challenged by the score, but giving it her all as an actress who sings. Patti's performance, to me, is one which can be appreciated both on stage and on record, while Bernadette's would have had to be seen on stage to be fully appreciated for what it was.
And this is coming from a die-hard Patti-lover.

If you haven't seen either one, why are you commenting?
That being said, hasn't the OP asked this exact same question before?
The OP is a twit who likes to start crap and then look all innocent. Very troll-ish.
Peter or Daniel?
Who does a better nude scene?

"If you haven't seen either one, why are you commenting?"
To piss you off. :)
I'm commenting b/c the question was "Who played the better Rose, and why?" It doesn't say a thing about on stage, or off, so I saw no problems with contributing what I got from their RECORDED performances. If you read beyond my first sentence (and I'm not so certain that you did), you'll see that my opinions are based completely on the cast recordings, because I know as well as you do that I can't say a thing about their complete performances b/c I haven't seen either one (and Bernadette's I'll never get to see, so as far as you seem to be concerned, I should just never have posted in this thread to begin with).
But to be honest, that paragraph is all BS. I REALLY just did it to piss you off. :P

Yes, as far as I'm concerned you shouldn't have posted
At least we both agree then.

LOL, well we might not agree, but at least we aren't bitter. Though I do wish I could have seen Bernadette's whole performance. I actually really like her TONY clip.
Side note, and totally off-topic: How do you all format the text, or make actual smiley faces on here? I can't figure it out, and it kinda bugs me just a little bit when I want to emphasize something and I have to settle for CAPS.

For actual smiley faces, you just type like : - ) for a normal smiley,
At least that's how I do it, idk how everyone else does.

Okay, off-topicness over.
