Best Play Tony 2012

Now that I've seen all the eligible plays, I really think we have 5 highly-deserved plays that will be competing for 4 slots. Why can't we open up the Best Play/Musical categories if that much good work exists like they have for the acting slots?
CLYBOURNE PARK
VENUS IN FUR
OTHER DESERT CITIES
ONE MAN, TWO GUVNORS
PETER AND THE STARCATCHERS
Each has their own merits and faults and I really think each deserves a shot at the award. Thoughts?

#3Best Play Tony 2012
Posted: 4/19/12 at 12:35pmI don't see Venus in Fur getting nominated for Best Play. It will be recognized for the actors and possibly the direction, but I think it's the one that will get left out of the top category.
#4Best Play Tony 2012
Posted: 4/19/12 at 12:35pmI'm going to get torched for saying this, but I'd rather not see CLYBOURNE PARK get nominated over any of the other four shows.

Posted: 4/19/12 at 12:37pmI agree, but barring critical revilement, I don't see it happening since it has pedigree.
#6Best Play Tony 2012
Posted: 4/19/12 at 12:38pmOh frogs, I 100% agree. I think Clybourne Park is by far the worst of those 5 plays, but there's no way it isn't getting nominated unless all of the critics do a complete 180 tonight.

#8Best Play Tony 2012
Posted: 4/19/12 at 12:53pmWill it, though? I could see them rewarding the production by nominating Lavin and Latessa.

Clybourne Park could be denied a nomination. (I won't say snubbed because I don't think it deserves a nom in the first place.)
Remember when the equally overrated Bengal Tiger came in on wave of out of town raves and being a Pulitzer finalist? It was also locked out of Best Play. There could easily be a turnaround with the reviews tonight; not pans, but at least mixed. Clybourne Park is also not selling all that well and they may feel like rewarding something like Venus and Fur for running.

I couldn't imagine the CLYBOURNE reviews being too different from the off-Broadway notices it received, which were extremely positive all-around. I think it'll be a nominee, for sure, but this is OTHER DESERT CITIES' award in my opinion.

Posted: 4/19/12 at 1:38pmI'd like to see Venus in Fur win. That is very unlikely but its not being nominated will be a sure sign that tony voters wouldn't recognize a great play if their lives depended on it.

Posted: 4/19/12 at 2:30pmI think we'll be able to better judge after Clybourne's reviews come out tonight. Right now, my inclination is to say that Venus gets locked out but is rewarded with nominations for Arianda and Dancy.

Posted: 4/19/12 at 2:48pmSo is Peter and the Starcatcher not considered a front runner? (I'm pretty out of the loop when it comes to plays this season)
