If he's interested in theatrics and spectacles, why not give Phantom a try? I have a 12-year old relative who thought the Phantom was "freaking cool," as he put it, and there's fire involved, if he's a bit of a pyromaniac.
Spelling Bee, Phantom, Jersey Boys, Hairspray, Wicked...all great choices
I'd say Spelling Bee.

ill go with the crowd and agree on Spelling Bee-lots of fun!
and i was just wondering, for Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, is there A LOT of bad stuff in it? I'm a young teen, and was wondering if it's appropriate for me...(seeing it sunday, so i wanna know what i may wanna warn my parents about- they hated RENT, so how would this show compare for innappropriate stuff?)
bwayondabrain: There are some sexual references in DRS (The robe scene, using phrases to describe sex, which won't be mentioned here.) and of couse there's the matter of bad language (One f-bomb, uses of the s-word, the list goes on and on) and there's implied sex between two characters. It's not as vulgar and innapropiate as it sounds, and if you're a young teen like I am, you should find some humor in it. I certainly did. If it were a movie, I would rate it PG-13.

okay, thanks
and just one more question about the language: on a scale of 1-10 (10 being a WHOLE LOT of languae), how much would you give DRS?
sorry and thanks- my parents are not fans of lots of language, so just wondering...
I took my little brother who is 11 to see Wicked and oh wow did he love it....seriously one of the best nights of his life he said (we had fun...dinner before hand...stagedoor after). I have tickets for Hairspray in the summer for him. Keep in mind these are both in LA and not NYC.
On a scale of 1 to 10, I'd give it a 5.
And no need to be sorry. I'm glad to help.

oh a 5, that isnt too bad
and thanks, piazzaslight! btw, love the signature :)
should be fun!!! cannot wait for sunday!!! (will be one of the best days of my life, seriously) :)
Avenue Q is too much, and there are parts in RENT that are probably going to be too much (there is more cursing and adult themes prevalent in the stage version than in the film). Plus, it's artistic enough that I am not too sure if he would get parts of it. Same with Sweeney Todd, and definitely not The Producers, he probably will not get some of the humor.
I strongly recommend Spelling Bee, Hairspray, The Phantom of the Opera, and if you can get the tickets, Wicked.
I'd say Spelling Bee. Everyone I've know who's seen the show has loved it, and I think even an 11 year old would like it.
And on the topic of DRS, I saw it with my dad in September, and I raved about it for the next couple of weeks, where my 11 year old sister expressed interest in seeing it. At first my parents were a bit hesitant, but in the end they let her go. She enjoyed it, a few parts went over her head, but she enjoyed it none the less.

I would say Bee or Hairspray. (I am seeing Bee next month and I plan on taking the kids.)
NOT Avenue Q. That show is made for adults only. Bad idea. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is a great show, and Spelling Bee is amazing, accept it does have one song about an errection.

I completely agree with the Spelling Bee choice. It would be cool if he participated in the show as one of the spellers as well! Very fun.

Lion King
Beauty and The Beast
Mamma Mia
Spamalot (live a little)
Tarzan
Hairspray
You could also try something Off-Broadway like Altar Boyz or Drumstruck (which could make for a very fun experience).
