That's exactly what Patti told me when she signed my Master Class Playbill.
I could see Patti replacing in the right situation, like Bernadette in Night Music. But she certainly won't be a replacement in a revival that was originally being developed for her, before a clash with Jerry Herman.

How much did NPH make for Hedwig? I recall a much larger number but perhaps I'm remembering incorrectly.
Totally agree with a CarlosAlberto previous post.
If Bette played this for a year, she'd pull in $7.2M. Who cares? If fill-in-the-blank was cast in a movie remake of Dolly, the salary might be $20M for three months work. The times we live in...

When Bette vacates, do you think we could drag in Cher or Cyndi Lauper for 8 weeks?
With talk of replacements, the LuPone wish fulfillment line has formed in earnest. I don't see how she's even remotely right for this role. She isn't especially adept at the style of comedy required (see NOISES OFF), and the score wouldn't exactly employ the range everyone wants her to demonstrate. What would she bring to it? (Picture her in THE MATCHMAKER; would you want to see her in it?). To me she's forever a Molloy, not a Dolly, but people think she could, can, should do every role written for a woman in the musical theater. I'm not among them.

So I guess Maureen in the RENT tour is out?

Tragic. She would've definitely, you know, been in that role.
I might be willing to sleep with Bruce Villanch for access to house seats.
Honestly doesn't seem like that much money. It's a nice pay day sure, but home girl has a lot riding on her shoulders.
For what she's making in a month, you could feed 4 third world countries for a month.

what is your point
"what is your point"
Isn't it clear? Golden Boy clearly feels Broadway is a waste of time. Theatres should be closed down. No one should waste such money buying tickets for trivial enjoyment when they could do so much more good feeding the poor or the world. Anyone who spends upwards of $10 on mere entertainment should be ashamed of themselves.
Did I get that right?

that argument seems to pop up from time to time. doesn't make sense to me. there is no proof that an investor spending $200k on a musical would just donate that money to a charity if the musical didn't exist, or that a patron spending $150 on a ticket to a musical would be donating that money to a charity if not for the show. that thinking is so flawed and goes against logical sensisbilities.
The point is that its a ridiculous amount of money for one person.
The point is to make up for the exorbitant salary, every else will be working for scale.
The break even on this show will be about $700,000 per week instead of the usual 450-550 for a musical.
Does Bette Middler really need to be making 7,500,000 per year when half of that goes to to taxes.?
It just seems extravagant... even for a star.
It is a lot of money, and I doubt she 'needs' it. However, when the box office performance will likely be a direct function of her presence it seems fair for her to be receiving a significant proportion of that revenue. And as mentioned, it's relatively low compared with other entertainment mediums (i.e., Film and TV).

Yes, and another way to look at it is no one would be working without Midler in the role as the production would likely not be occurring. I get more worked up over professional athlete paydays, particularly baseball player salaries, being absurd than I do with this situation.

And let's remember that Midler, like many well paid stars, gives a great deal of her money away to worthy causes.

don't even know where to start with this... let's take it line by line:
The point is to make up for the exorbitant salary, every else will be working for scale.
how do you know this? do you have insider knowledge?
The break even on this show will be about $700,000 per week instead of the usual 450-550 for a musical.
that is actually really inaccurate. a production of this size would be more like $550k - $600k so your argument is not very strong. additionally, the majority of Bette pay will be linked to the box office. she will have to actually work for her income. that is completely reasonable and typical of any big name star on Broadway.
Does Bette Middler really need to be making 7,500,000 per year when half of that goes to to taxes.?
the answer to this one will vary, depending on your own personal experiences and viewpoints on money. no one NEEDS 7.5 million. no one NEEDS 200k, for that matter. if we only lived with what we NEEDED, we'd all have some healthcare... clothes... shelter... and food. that is it. but you know that is an absurd and obtuse way of looking at the world so I am going to assume it was a stupid ridiculous rhetorical question.
It just seems extravagant... even for a star.
i hope you never find out the salaries and annual take-home pays of major movie stars. youll probably have a convulsion

If someone is to receive more money than they need I can live with that someone being an artist. As for Bette at this point in time I can seeing her being the definitive "Dolly" so this is likely to be the only full tilt Broadway Musical I will be seeing in 2017.
