Bette's cake - no Happy Birthday?

Am I the only one who thought it strange that the wonderful surprise birthday cake at end of performance of Hello, Dolly! for Bette Midler's 72nd birthday was simply a "cake billboard" for the show and made no mention of her birthday?  Oh, well.  I hope the cake was scrumptious, at least! :)

It was beautiful and I am sure much appreciated.  Girl.;  talk about trying to twist things up.

Why not? It’s not like these boards are only for “important” matters. And yeah, actually, now that you mention it lol, it is odd that her cake didn’t say Happy Birthday. Not that it matters but I’d call that a minus one for whoever is keeping score.

In case you need to know... there was another red cake that they served to the cast before the show. It said "Happy Birthday, Bette!" in the same font as the show logo. Sorry they didn't show that to you.

(Edited to remove last name and add exclamation point!)

I'm sure Bette happily ate a tiny piece of it regardless.

Well adding Midler to that second cake is cold as well since we’re talking about it. It just seems very sterile. If someone presented me with a cake with first and last name, I would think it was a little weird. But that’s just me.

If the cake is meant to look like the show logo, that logo does tend to use her last name.

If you're above the title in a show, and they make a cake recreating that logo, informality leads to asymmetry.

This is the kind of conversation that makes Jesse Tyler Ferguson feel a need to taunt us.

I guess they consulted PatrickDennis92. I stand corrected, it didn't say Midler.

I hope everyone's happy now!

Well it’s a message board, not the council of nicea. A little taunting is to be expected. And this is indeed a trivial matter, but who cares? I hadn’t noticed the thing with the cake, then I saw it here and thought, “oh yeah,” and realized that it could have been a little warmer. Just using the show logo makes it less about Bette’s birthday and more about a photo op for the show. Which is fine. It doesn’t matter. But now I will retain that kernel going forward noting that a better way to show a genuine quality in this situation would be to make it less about the show, more about the birthday girl. That’s all.

There are few that don't.

There is a entire “cake” storyline in this seasons Jersey Housewives. What BWW chatboards have become.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this thread about cake.

Is there a picture of the other cake? I did think having a birthday cake with the cast album cover printed on it was kind of odd as well. I don’t see why there couldn’t be a thread about it.

Did the cake sexually harass anyone? Did the cake refuse to stagedoor? When is the cast recording for the cake coming out, and why is it not what I wanted the cast recording to be? Will Betsy Wolfe be replacing the cake? Was it a white cake and, if so, why is #broadwaysowhite? Let's all dream cast the cake- Aaron Tveit! Where should I sit to see the cake? What other cakes should I see?

Betsy will replace the cake, and then she herself will be replaced three weeks later by Mandy Patinkin

Pretty sure it was red velvet!

Do bakeries typically charge by the letter? Nothing says we love you Bette like Original Production Directed and Choreographed by Gower Champion.

Good lord, Jorge, call it a "Native American Velvet" cake, or an "American Indian Velvet" cake. Better yet, refer to it by its own tribal affiliation! Commentators like you only show the sad state of indigenous representation on Broadway.

This is my favorite response to my thread so far!  No one ever said posting on BWW was a cakewalk, right? :)
