It's a toss-up between Great Comet closing and Hello Dolly at the Tonys (performance choice and the appropriateness of Midler's acceptance speech, the latter of which was a HUGE DEAL to really old-school highly conservative closed-minded Tony purist marms and their grandmothers).

-Great Comet seemed by far the biggest/most involving-there were at least three or four sizable threads solely about the controversy
-The whole Betsy Wolfe kerfuffle
-Perhaps the MFL casting? While I wouldn’t call it a scandal, it definitely got a lot of attention this year.

-current casting director situation

-Patti Murin's performance being embraced by people who post here

Comet made me vomit. I agonized over what tickets to buy to see Mandy, bought them, and the next day had to get a refund.... argh.

Things with potential impact 5/10 years from now -

- Rapp/Spacey allegations and eventual consequences. 

- Casting directors unionizing controversy

- The way race relations in America played into Great Comet's closing

 

Honorable mention - When Pigs Fly cancellation. We get one-two of these somewhat highly covered shows every year where finances fall through.
