thank HEYMRMUSIC!!!! hey do you have any idea why they wont nominate the girls? was there a backlash?
BTW, I didnt see Patina, but i did see Cinderella and Laura was FLAWLESS. She is about to explode if she hasnt already, and Tony might want to get out in front of that

"I have a feeling Best Supporting Actor will now go to one of the well deserving Men in The Mystery of Edwind Drood...Will Chase or Andy Karl's eyebrows."
This category is actually MOTOWN's best chance of winning an acting Tony for Charl Brown's Smokey Robinson unless Broadway veteran Terence Mann finally gets a Tony for PIPPIN (remember Greg Jbara besting Christopher Seiber and Will Swenson in 2009).
"How many actors alternated playing the role of Billy Elliot? I'm curious as to why the boys playing Billy could be eligible for an acting nomination but the girls of Matilda can't..."
My cousin was just thinking the same thing. Double standard? And if the Matildas had been nominated and won, they would have had the youngest female to win within their ranks, Sophia, 10 years old.
I have a question: can the nominating committee decide that since there are more than five deserving Lead Actress in a Play nominees (imo there are six: Jessica Hecht, Laurie Metcalf, Amy Morton, Kristine Nielsen, Holland Taylor and Cicely Tyson; I am aware that others are partial to Bette Midler and Fiona Shaw as well) to open up the number of nominees in the category? If they only allow five, who is the most likely to be left off the list? I think it would be Holland Taylor for Ann - your thoughts?
I thought that one committee dealt with eligibility and a different committee dealt with nominations (and a third one controls voting) so it doesn't mean Lilla will get a nomination. The Matilda's get a special award as their performance was deemed award worthy but not comparable to the others. If they don't nominate lilla it won't be wrong, as her performance is comparable but they may consider it not award worthy! (For the record I think she will get nominated anyway!)
Who the hell is MJT? I'm guessing it's an exceptionally long name that would take just entirely too long to spell out. Or is he just that famous that initials for his name are known world wide?
"I wouldn't be surprised if the R+H estate puts in alot of money for one hell of a campaign that will have some focus on Osnes."
Bullsh*t. Except for their position as royalty participants, The Rodgers and Hammerstein Organization is not a member of the producing team of this show. Mary R. and Alice H. would flip their lids if the producers took any of their royalties in order to campaign for a Tony for Laura Osnes that she doesn't stand a chance of winning.
If nominated, CINDERELLA will win Costume Design and that's it. MATILDA and PIPPIN will split the other awards.
I don't see Michael James Thomas (MJT) getting in. I'm pretty sure it will be Carvel, Porter, Fontana, McClure, and Dixon, with Dixon's spot MAYBE going to Warlow.
Also, with Nielsen not eligible in the featured category and Vanya still being the best reviewed new play of the season, I wouldn't be shocked if Shalita Grant snuck in with a nomination.
Also does the lack of specificity imply that only the Young Berry/Michael who went on in Motown on opening night is eligible a la David Bologna in Billy Elliot?
Awarding the Matildas is a slippery slope. From now on, everytime a child performs will they give them a special award?
And what's so special about these performances that Andrea McArdle or Daisy Eagen didn't do? Both of those actresses had to perform in untested material.
If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.
I wouldn't count out Stark Sands at all. He's a former nominee and was well reviewed in a well reviewed show. Fontana is well respected in the industry and Warlow is making his Broadway debut at long last. I can see the three of them filling out the category. Great group of performers if you ask me.
They dont want to nominate the Matildas because it will become a sympathy vote like it did for the Billys and they will win because they are young. Tony voters dont want to be put in the position of traumatizing a group of kids.
Its a smart move.

The four girls playing Matilda all got across-the-board raves. I don't see how taking them out of contention for fairness of the competition and instead giving them a Tony Honor is out of the blue. Many have suggested that on here. Congrats to them!

I still don't think Matilda is as big of a lock for best musical especially with the news of these rulings. We may be in for a surprise come Tony night!
