Supposedly because an investor gave them money to keep going through early next year, so the weekly grosses doesn't matter. (getting the reply ahead of the question this week)

I assume this is in reference to HOH?

King Kong made more money in 2 performances than HOH did in 8.

I know it's only two performances, but I was not expecting King Kong to jump out of the gates at 92% gross % potential for the first two previews, given how large the theatre is. My prediction has always been that in a best case scenario, it starts off slow in sales and word of mouth about the puppet slowly builds its momentum.

Crazy big bump for Wicked. Is that a function of the publicity surrounding the 15th anniversary and NBC TV special?

Was someone out of Anastasia last week? It seems like an unusually high drop compared to everything else last week.
Astonishing numbers for Kong. I'm so curious to see how that goes from here. And Summer...eek.

Anastasia seems to be fluctuating a lot the past few weeks, no idea why because the only cast change has been Mary Beth Peil's departure, and I can't imagine that affecting box office.
Baffled that there is such an audience for a King Kong musical. I guess lots of people want to see a giant puppet?

Looking at Telecharge availability for King Kong, it looks like all performances this week will easily sell out. Maybe the expected naysayers will be proved wrong.

I thought the naysayers just said they didn't expect it to be a good show? I don't recall them saying it wouldn't sell. Very different things.
Plus, a show selling out in its first week doesn't mean much. It is a known property and people are curious. The advance is more important than it selling well now, plus if it gets negative word of mouth, that could slow things down, too.

Remember, CAROUSEL, WAR PAINT, SHUFFLE ALONG, and FIDDLER were very top-heavy when they started previews, too. But it's great that KONG is starting high, and hopefully the grosses will continue and rise!

I think it will be the opposite. I went because my son is a King Kong fan and it seemed there were a lot of folks similarly minded. People were MOST excited about the puppet and I think curiosity will drive attendance until the reviews come out. And they will be bad. They might be ALL-TIME bad. Then folks will realize that no matter how cool the puppet is, it's not worth the $. Tourists may keep it afloat until June and that will be it, mercifully. To each his own, but I think encouraging folks to see King Kong keeps them away from much better artistic offerings.
Also, NYC Comic Con was this weekend, and that crowd would certainly pick King Kong over most anything else.

It’s interesting to see (and I think nice) to see The Band’s Visit keep chugging along with good to excellent numbers. Has it announced recoupment yet? If not, I bet it recoups soon.

It's actually remarkable how precipitously Summer's numbers have been falling.

I agree. I don't think it can hang around for much longer

A question and a comment:
1. what is the "yikes" about Anastasia? It escapes me.
2. what is the frame of reference on Summer that warrants the label "precipitous"? It seems to me the precipitous drop was half a lifetime ago.

My Yikes about Anastasia was because they had an attendance drop not towards the actual gross.
Also, not that it means anything but Lachanze hasnt been in the show the last week and a half.

Regarding King Kong, people need to be more chill. If the puppet is beautiful and given that the lead is certainly a pretty woman, I think it could last until summer -- even if it gets frozen out of the awards season and even if the regular broadway goers aren't head over heels in love with it.
Ah, you see what I did there?

yes, almost identical to the attendance gain they had in the prior frame. Regardless this does not strike me as a yikes situation.
