2018 was Broadway's greatest year ever both in terms of grosses as well as attendance. And the year it topped which previously was Broadway's greatest year ever, was 2017. And with the holidays coming up, 2019 has a shot to set a new record. So, I think you may be... mistaken.

Others have dismembered your second paragraph but I'll have a go at this one. I cannot speak to elsewhere in the US but walking around NYC it is clear that it is overflowing with foreign tourists and it has been especially noticeable lately. I gather you are making your statements from afar.
The articles you posted tell us that international travel to the US is slowing but still up 6% over last year. That's not exactly "zilch." There were 13.5M international tourists visiting NYC last year, the highest number ever.

Silly me all this time I should've been getting my news from the 'northern star meeting groups' website instead of Forbes, The Financial Times, The Telegraph and CNN.
I'd still love to know the mathematical methodology you used to turn a slight decline in visitors from a record 70-80 million into "zilch". I have some formal training in Econometrics and Supply and Demand theory but I really feel as if I could learn something new from you.
"Could it be that the whole Harry Potter franchise is losing steam"
Very possible. The franchise has nothing left to give it some life. All the books have been written, the movies have been made and now a Broadway show about Harry Potter grown up. The Broadway show has already run over 1 1/2 years which is pretty good for a play. I saw it in London last December and it was sold out the day/night I went with my family.

Sorryx"
Impossible2 did you read the article? And click through to the source? The info is from the NYC Convention and Tourism Bureau, NYC&CO. I'd say they know these stats better than anyone.
It was a random comment made on a Broadway chat board in a vague attempt to explain why some shows may not be doing so well based on a multitude of articles I have perused on the subject of bad US tourism receipts over the last year or so, it really isn't that deep.
If it isn't correct fair enough, I really do not care. It was a throw away comment...seriously you people REALLY need to lighten up a bit x
@Impossible2, it did not strike me as random or a throwaway or something you did not care about. (People who do not care about something do not generally post about it repeatedly.) Those terms strike me as the last refuge of someone who doesn't want to simply say I was wrong. But you persist in repeating incorrect info so I guess you are still hiding. Here's the deal: being lighthearted about facts doesn't fly.

If you didn’t care, why’d you bother posting all those articles?

It took a 2 second google search. I knew I would find many articles because I have seen so many of them over the last 18 months and it has also been mentioned frequently on MSNBC shows that I watch.
The fact I was able to do so proves that I didn't just make it up or pull it out of my butt, so I am not going to 'admit I was wrong', as I was passing on information I had read and heard for quite a while. I also know a number of people who feel the way I mentioned, so have heard it in a lot of conversations.
I will however apologise for being snarky and flippant to certain members, as it was not called for and I and those I did it too are better than that.
I will also plead guilty to merely headline gazing and not reading the full articles as clearly in a lot of cases when you actually dig deeper into the subject, the headlines are not entirely accurate to what is written below.
So I will freely admit I was wrong (which I have absolutely no problem doing EVER) in the fact that I misquoted articles based on the headlines, but my perception was not wrong based on the information I had seen and heard many times over the last 18 months.
As far the Potter info I had. I happened to be sitting beside someone who worked for one of the producers at a show earlier this year who gave me the information I quoted. I too thought costs would be much higher and he corrected me. Now London has been running much longer and have things down pat by now and of course is in a different country so costs are different. But the price was just under 400,00 pounds a week, which is around 650,00 - 700,000 U.S. The rest of the info I gave is pretty much straight from his mouth. Now he may have been lying and was indeed a sheep farmer from New Zealand, but he seemed pretty legit and knew what he was talking about. So once again, I was just the messenger...
As far as caring goes...I care greatly about art on Broadway doing poorly, however the US tourism industry is of little interest to me beyond headline gazing on websites or listening to a news story that happens to be on. I was engaging in a discussion on a discussion forum and imparted information. I cared about joining in discussions, I find discussions interesting. The fact they no longer happens here without hysteria and triggering almost beyond human comprehension is something I do care about. To quote Taylor Swift, You Need to Calm Down.
This place used to be fun, you could have a laugh, be silly. Now it is an unwelcoming place full of nasty trolls who seem to do little more than spend the day hunting down their next victim and then toying with them until they lose the will to fight back and you get your win.
So sharpen your arrows and fire away again I guess.

While there are certain people who just love to be rude, bully, and provoke others on here, once you get past them, there do seem to be others who will tell you to ignore them, they're not worth it, that they do this a lot, etc. I know I was annoying (well...can be honestly) but after I had this big blow-out on one of the threads on here, I was able to find common ground with another poster (Come From Away will always unite those who have fought...right?). As for the other person they told me to ignore, that person has been very quiet I think. Maybe they blocked me. Either way, you should block people if they're just making this a bad experience for you. It doesn't mean in any sense that you're weak--you're doing what is best for your mental health. =)

I don’t think anyone is looking to “win” nor did we expect or need this long of an apology. But when you’re presenting information that’s not accurate it’s going to be called out, as it was. I think that’s always been the case here as far back as 8 years ago or so when I started on here. Can’t present your argument as factual when it’s not. I apologize if I came off too snarky, but I do find it interesting when people can’t handle pushback on their arguments. Again, I apologize if I was too harsh. Agree with Magic just ignore the annoying posters, including me if you feel necessary. I don’t disagree in general it’s more nasty around here than ever. In the off topic thread, someone posted what a shame it was someone resigned over sexual assault, and one poster responded “A shame they DID it or that they resigned?” Like, really? We’re better than that here. I think pointing out the flaws in your argument is one thing, being snarky and rude and demeaning is another. Again, my apologies.
Moving forward though, if The Inheritance receives raves, I hope their grosses improve. May not be able to catch it until spring so I hope for an extension.
Interesting NYT article that touches on the points of the HP discussion here. Article says "Their weekly grosses are now near their weekly running costs..."
Harry Potter’s Sophomore Slump: ‘Cursed Child’ Loses Steam on Broadway
Yet he gives no proof as to how he knows that they are close to their weekly costs or what that number might be. Just a blanket opinion statement thrown out as fact. And as far at someone saying Hello Dolly had almost a million dollar a week running cost - Hello Dolly had a weekly salary of $150,000 plus more on the backend, as well as David Hyde Pierce (who probably was making between $50-100k) and Gavin Creel (making at least $30k a week). That right there is almost $300,000! No one in Harry Potter is making close to those numbers.

I doubt that was his opinion - he's an experienced reporter with a good understanding of commercial theater. I think he just didn't cite his source, which was likely either the questions he asked the producers or the investment documents. Fun fact: anyone, for a small fee and some time doing some research and filling out some forms, can request investment docs from the secretary of state and see the budget that was presented to investors.
Also, Gavin was making much less than $30k/week on Dolly.
