I posted in length about this on last week’s grosses thread, but this week confirms my suspicions: looking ahead to the future, A Strange Loop is not in good shape right now.
What a great final week for Company. I stand by my statement from last week that A Strange Loop and Hadestown are looking soft. The number I'll be most curious to see a week from today will be Funny Girl after the first full week of Julie Benko as Fanny.

Wow, it was Beanie's last week in FG and attendance and grosses went slightly down... Just another evidence of the decision to replace her made correctly
This ASL death watch is pretty comical. It's not in trouble. Will it be in the future? Of course. Every show is eventually. Could it be sooner rather than later? Sure, but it could just as easily improve. Look at what's happened to DEH because of some tweaking. And yes the numbers for Beanie's last week are jaw-dropping.
Exactly. I'm sure ASL is happy to be making money after previews and all that. I think it'll be fine for awhile. It has a number of big name producers who could easily help out if needed.

I'm not doing a death watch for it. I don't think it's closing anytime soon. I just think its numbers are softer than they should be at this point in its run after the Tony win.
MJ's numbers continue to shock me.
Great week to be a Sondheim show!

It's a black, queer show. I don't think it's going to be on the sale scale as Hairspray. I think it's doing just fine.
The FG numbers are no surprise to this board, where we noted the dried up advance almost two months ago after the first $326k drop. The box office never rebounded. Yet on Facebook and Twitter the mythology wouldn’t cease. “She’s selling out and they fired her!” “Word of mouth overrode the reviews! She brought people anyway!” I read it yesterday. When you cite actual box office, they pretend they didn’t hear. The narrative won’t accommodate facts: the show as cast was not a hit and not sustainable without an advance.
As folks here know, a lot of the theater going world doesn’t think about messy things like money and paying bills. Twitter was filled with outrage that “they” closed Company early. “They” insulted Sondheim! “They” kicked Company like “they” kicked Beanie when she was down! The disconnect - a reality check that this is an industry and a costly one - continues.

For real. The death watch is annoying me. It’s grossing in the mid-$700K, which is great for a musical of this scale with absolutely no known names or entities to rely on. Time will tell of course but people need to chill the heck out right now.
Worth noting that FUNNY GIRL is a MUCH bigger show and only managed to gross <$25K more than ASL this week in a theatre that has 307 more seats to sell per performance.
Since people, again, are putting words in peoples mouths:
There is no A Strange Loop “death watch.” We are simply comparing it to past Tony winners. Just because it has a more niche subject, does not mean that it is cheaper to run than say, Fun Home.
Yes, the numbers are fine for now. But it also should be making more money at this point in its run.
I get all sides. For those (including myself) who have been following this kind of thing for a while but not a lifetime the Tony for Best Musical was always the one thing that would guarantee a sold out run long after the tony dust has settled. So I think it is surprising to many of us it’s not happening in this case. Maybe we need more imagination, and looking back ASL does not seem to be in as bad a state as PASSION. But it’s just surprising that’s all.
Anyway, Company went out on a high as Chris Harper wanted/predicted and those into the woods numbers are insane. So something positive!
This was discussed at length last week. To summarize some points that came up:
—Yes, it’s true that Strange Loop’s numbers are notably lower than previous Best Musical winners, even shows like Fun Home and Band’s Visit.
—it may be because it doesn’t appeal as much to the masses, or maybe lingering effects of the pandemic, or (more likely) some combination thereof. And for a number of reasons, a show can still be effected by COVID even if other shows aren’t.
—This show was always a risk, and it’s also a passion project for many involved. So if they can recoup, that will be a success for all involved.
—When it really comes down to it, there’s no “should” - they have respectable numbers, which were observably influenced by the Tony wins. There are always lots of variables, and not all Best Musical winners need to have the same path.
It’s a notable exception to a recent rule, yes. But that exception has been noted, and continuing to note it repeatedly (while the numbers remain roughly in the same range) is what makes it come across as a “death watch.”
I know everyone will do as they please, and this post won’t change that. But regardless, that’s my 2 cents.
