Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 8/13/23

JoeW4 said: "People keep citingthe Booth’s small capacity as the reason for its low grosses, but I don’t think that’s the case.

First off, it’s not hitting 100% capacity each week. Meaning that, even with its small number of seats, the supply is still higher than the demand. No prospective ticket-buyer is getting shut out; 5,037wanted to see Kimberly Akimbo last week, and that’s how many people saw it. Theoretically, it would still be 5,037 people if the show were in the Gershwin. If anything, the intimacy might be a selling point that the Gershwin wouldn’t have.

Secondly, if you look at something like Hadestown as a point of comparison; another Best Musical winner that was in a small house, and kind of off-beat (not the sort of show that tourists would automatically flock to without a Best Musical win and strong word of mouth). After their Tony win, Hadestown was making 2-3 times the money than Kimberly is making, in a house that’s only about 200 seats larger.

I think Kimberly is an even tougher sell to a tourist than Hadestown, Fun Home. First, the name makes you go "wait what?" and then any imagery from the show is an older woman with teenagers. It's a very weird show. So it was always going to be an uphill battle to convince people to go check this show out. It didn't really have any built-in word of mouth. It's not the show that's going to appeal to a Bridge and Tunnel crowd, or a girl's night out kind of crowd. Honestly, I'm not sure who their audience is? When I saw it - it was sold out - but the audience was all over age wise, which I guess is a good thing.

Kad said: "Streep is clearly at a place in her career where she’d rather do things for her own joy- particularly projects with longtime friends and collaborators. And why not, she has nothing left to prove. She would be a dream cast for Kimberly, for sure."

Streep's output has also changed (and slowed down) quite a bit. She hasn't played the lead in a theatrically-released film since Spielberg's THE POST in 2017. She didn't appear in a movie in 2022 and won't be in any this year either. These days she's mostly doing streaming films and supporting/cameo roles.

Which is fine if that's what she enjoys doing! She's 74 and deserves to enjoy her golden years.

"No way that Meryl Would be a replacement. But, give me the movie starring her! She'd be amazing!"

Actually, I thought Cherry Jones was better in "Doubt" on Broadway than Meryl was in the same role in the movie.

Re: Kimberly Akimbo, David Stone is a pretty savvy producer and I trust he knows what he’s doing. He also, notably, produced next to normal at the booth theatre and that had a successful run and was similar in size to KA.

Assuming it costs 550-600 a week to run, it should be ok for now but their grosses probably peaked the week of 6/25 ($736,319). Whether it makes it to the one-year mark remains to be seen. I don't know what kind of losses they sustained pre-Tonys / how much $ is in the bank. I don't expect any funds have or will be returned to investors.

I don't think Kimberly has any more tourists appeal than Fun Home had. Which is why it'll be a tough sell on tour.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

They’ll just have to get Melissa Manchester for it.
