Thank goodness Scherzinger is out. I'm not too familiar with Lena Hall but I'm sure she'll do great. Marin Mazzie would have been perfection though.

It feels like a bad choice on her behalf to me. The U.K. X factor has lost its spark, it's almost a joke over here now.
Saying that, I doubt her bouncers coming out whenever she came on stage would have gone down well on Broadway, she's not a big star in the US I believe?
Nicole was actually fabulous in this, but am looking forward to seeing someone new.
Considering how they've cast this in London so far, I would think they'd be interested in recruiting someone who doesn't have a typical musical theatre background but can sing the living crap out of the song. In London they had Nicole, Kerry Ellis (granted, musical theatre royalty in London but with a slight and desperate pop-cross over attempt) and finally Beverley Knight (soul diva crossing over to musical theatre lately).
Wow. That's shocking. Although I wouldn't completely trust digital spy. Lots of British websites/tabloids are known to fabricate things. Even more so than US ones.
If completely true though, I guess she's after money. I see no other reason why she'd turn it down when she said it was her dream to do CATS on Broadway. She's also releasing an album later this year which apparently will be more classical music instead of pop. How on earth would judging a lame reality TV show help your career besides fame and money?
I mean, given ALW's history, does it really sound made up? Anyway, it's already confirmed that she's doing X-Factor, so even if the story along with this is fake, there is no way she's coming in.

Hell yes I'd do the same as her. Take a stack of cash over coming on and singing one song in this turgid old musical. And him saying she would have won a Tony is just hysterical. He's a fool of a man.

The article cites and links to the radio interview they got the quotes from, so seems legit.

Is there a reason they're casting Grizabella so young? I always understood the character to be some kind of "faded glamour cat", which I always took to mean, well, older.
I don't think any of the ladies they've recently cast is SO young.
Nicole and Kerry Ellis are 37, and Beverley Knight 43. I think they want someone accessible across many demographics, and age wise, these ladies are familiar to people from their 20s-40s, at least that was in the case in the UK.
I also think they are looking for a certain style when it comes to singing Memory. They are definitely going towards more of an X-Factor/Idol sound now than they did in the 80s with the Betty Buckley and Laurie Beeckman sound.

Yep, I just listened to the radio interview. ALW is not happy. Seems like he overreacted a bit though. I loved Scherzinger's version of memory but there are plenty of other's who can play Grizabella. Have to wonder if this all part of creating hype for a show that's probably not going to do well in the first place, with or without Scherzinger.
Sir ALW seems to love Sierra Boggess. It wouldn't surprise me if he goes after her for the role, even though it doesn't show off the sweet spot in her voice.
I wouldn't oppose to Sierra starring in this. I'm very into her belt. Although if she did, it would be the second time in a row she's played an ALW role much too old for her. I think she's departing the ingenue thing rather earlier than need be. I'd also be happy with Hall, whom I adore.

Betty Buckly, Elaine Paige, and most of the women that played the role on Broadway were all in their 30s at the time.
I personally think it doesn't matter about getting a "name" in the role. The show at this point is the star, and if I were a producer I wouldn't want to pay a name an elevated salary for that one song. The show doesn't need it. Any actress who has played Elphaba will be fine.
