I assume they're still trying to secure a high-profile name for Grizabella whether that will be Nicole Scherzinger again or someone else. If a theatre actress had landed the role, I imagine her name would've just been included in this press release.
ALW seemed intent on having Scherzinger do Grizabella on Broadway. My guess would be that she hasn't signed a contract yet and negotiations are still underway.
"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe."

I recall having that impression as well. How early the production is opening in relation to award season might have something to do with it. Scherzinger would have to put in a much longer run than most "names" are doing these days if she'd want to be around during the height of Tony season.
Though it might be a nice easy way to make her Broadway debut. I know Emma Stone dropped out of negotiations of Cabaret because she was nervous about things like perception and the awards-hoopla and felt "replacing" would be a less stressful debut.
Funny but with this casting, I almost don't care about who Grizabella's going to be. I'm excited to see so many folks I love together on the same stage. Broadway needs a talent like Tyler Hanes onstage a lot more! And so many folks from On The Town too, I'm very excited.

Well I didn't plan on seeing this show... Ever... But with a few friends in the cast, I will definitely be seeing it now. Seeing as every dancer I know auditioned I expected to know people in the cast-- but a part of me was secretly hoping none would be good friends! Hahha
Um hello, they practically already announced in every interview that Lena Hall is Grizabella. Which is good because she made her broadway debut as demeter.
As far as I've heard, Scherzinger is more than likely going to star as Grizabella. She's currently filming that Dirty Dancing remake, however, I'm pretty sure filming ends right before rehearsals for CATS start. I don't think that's just a coincidence.

Can you cite some of these interviews? I cannot find anything online. It won't be bad casting cos she sure as hell would slay the part, but this cast altogether simply won't pull in crowds. Is her Supporting Actress Tony (which she won for playing a man) an attractive enough box office lure? I don't think so.

Are they still doing the rapper Tugger? With Tyler Hanes? True that the replacement rapping Tugger in London was white, as was the Tugger in Australia, but I can see this being more of an issue in the US. (And the whole concept is dire and the costume already somehow looks more dated than the Glam Rock Tugger)
