Yeah that's what I thought was strange as well. But again, this is a source that's not wrong a lot of the time. Maybe they're going to see how the sales go for this next block of tix?

The gross from last week didn't seem too bad. and, they're playing to 79.65 of their capacity...could be a lot worse.
If it does post a closing notice soon, it did better than I thought it would.

They are playing at 79% capacity, but only have a gross potential of 53%. That's what can't get much worse.
I think sometimes the producer do a "stunt" like release a block of tickets to see how the public will respond. It can be a last ditch effort, or just a way to pretend they are more of a hit than they are. Other shows add talk backs or try changes in schedules. Remember when reasons to be pretty announced they were going to have a brand new crazy summer schedule, and then close the following week before the schedule could ever be implemented.
I've heard similar rumors to what Jordan heard. Honestly after the reviews, especially Brantley's, they're had a decent go at it. Just record the show and start peddling it to regional theaters.

Their average ticket price isn't great, but it's not horrible, either. They may well be considering a closing notice - as Whizzer says, this kind of thing is a common ploy with shows that aren't performing well.
I think it's *very* unlikely that it will post a closing notice as early as next week, though. You don't make official announcements like CHAPLIN just did and expect instant results. CHAPLIN will probably close soon, but I doubt they'll post a notice for at least two weeks, probably more. Not next week. That would be silly.
This isn't the same reliable source that led you to announce with certainty that War Horse was moving to the St James, is it, Jordan? :)

Posted: 10/18/12 at 6:12pmNo, but at the time they were absolutely looking at transferring there. The fact that things changed and they're closing doesn't mean the information was false when I reported on it.

Oh, I know for a fact that War Horse was considering a transfer, but at the time, you announced it as a certainty. It's good to see you are now more cautious in the way you impart your information.
I don't have any inside info on CHAPLIN, but I believe it is making its nut. It would be hard to believe that they'd announce a closing notice only one week after an official announcement of ticket block release and schedule changes.
But stranger things have happened.
Eta: no doubt, when they start stunts like this, it usually signals the beginning of the end - I just don't think it will be next week. If they haven't fallen below their break-even, the theater can't invoke stop clause. The only other reason I can see to post notice is to artificially boost sales.

Posted: 10/18/12 at 6:35pmLook, things change. This isn't the New York F'in Times and I'm not Diane Sawyer. If someone that I trust tells me something that I believe them on and I post it here, you can believe it or not and if it's true than it's true. So, I'm not more "cautious" about posting anything. If it doesn't happen, it doesn't happen. I'm under no obligation to post anything that's true or not true. I could start a thread saying Barbra Streisand took a dump in her underwear while singing "People" and I'm under no obligation to fact check it first.

Was this necessary? Jordan is usually right about this stuff. He posted about Cinderella taking the Broadway Theatre and was 100% correct.

Posted: 10/18/12 at 6:52pmYeah but when I post on things producers are discussing, then I'm no good. If only I had a time machine to make sure every piece of info I get on things that are being discussed actually happens.

Posted: 10/18/12 at 10:16pmonly reason for them to shutter would be due to high operating costs(which it shouldn't have) and a small advance in ticket sales.

I would imagine it's not the most expensive show to run. I guess it has quite a large ensemble, but not really any "names" that would be a problem. The set is simple and stage hands even wheel on the set, so they aren't wasting any money.
Why not get Rob McClure on the TV Show circuit? He's the reason to see the show, so take him around the talk shows.

I saw CHAPLIN earlier this week from the mezz. I couldn't spot an empty seat in the front mezz, and the rear was about 80-90 percent full. The orchestra looked packed as well. I'd say that bodes fairly well for at least the show's immediate future.
Nevertheless, I was a bit disappointed. There was no "wow" scene or moment, and the score was decidedly lackluster. I thought Carlyle's staging served the story better than it deserved. Liked Jenn Colella's Hedda, and Christiane Noll was in gorgeous voice, as always. Rob McClure, whom I thought was wonderful at Encores! WHERE'S CHARLEY?, was even better here and deserves not only recognition for his herculean portrayal but also a better show. It's not bad, just maddeningly so-so.

Posted: 10/19/12 at 8:45pmThere is absolutely no truth to this rumour. I talked to the manager of the show at the theater today and it is not true. The show is sold out tonight and been going very well. It has a low running cost and is making above that and future sales are growing and they opened up a new block of tickets through June. Rumours like this are just that rumours.
