I think a good concept for a Cabaret film would be to set all the numbers, except perhaps for Tomorrow Belongs to Me (reprise) and Cliff's start of the Finale, in the Kit Kat Klub. There's really only seven songs that happen outside of it. I don't think it has to be sparked in the mind of anyone in particular, but when a song starts just switch the camera angle and all the sudden we're in the Klub.
It would be so cool to see Frauline Schneider all frumpy and homely looking, showing Cliff the room then all the sudden she's in an evening gown, all made up, on stage singing So What.
^ So basically copy the whole theme of the Chicago movie?
honestly i'm tired of gimmicks in films that are musicals being used just to justify that it's a musical.
i think the most original way to go about it is to adapt the roundabout's re-conceived revival of the show for the screen and let the material stand on it's own.

I think the original Cabaret film is so outdated and in need of a fresh remake, more in the style of mendes's revival. The parts of that film that were considered sexy, daring, entertaining, and sexually funny are now cheesy to me IMO
but with Damn yankees happening, I feel like my chances are crushed. I love Cabaret TO DEATH and I still want and need for this to happen.

You're joking, right?? The original movie is anything but outdated and cheesy. It's still sexy, haunting, and creepy. You sound like a 12 year old.

I'm confused as to what one has to do with the other.

ljay889, I am not joking at all. It's a little bit corny, it doesn't have the same effect anymore. Seriously, the way they changed it for the roundabout version was f*cking incredible. Look at their wilkomen, and the film's wilkomen... there is a huge difference. I stand by what I said

I think Mendes' vision made it something glitteringly dark but not all that realistically dark. It was raunchy and distrubing, but in a way that made you think you shouldn't be watching something so naughty but you didn't wanna take your eyes off the stage.
However, I saw the Fosse film on TV a few weeks ago and I think it still holds up. It's naturalistically dark, it's disgusting even. The scenes at the Klub are something that you don't want to see, but for some reason can't look away.
...i hope that makes sense to anyone else besides me, lol
SweetNAwful, I completely agree.
The original Fosse CABARET film is brilliant in every way. One of the best Oscar-winning movies ever. It's just a perfectly-constructed film, perfectly-acted (as evidenced by Oscar-winning performances by both Minnelli and Grey), and just every bit as haunting, sexy, daring, tragic, and brilliant as ever. I think it's my favorite film of all times, I just love it so much (I actually like it more than the stage piece).
i'll never understand why people have such a problem with the movie of CABARET.
It's truly one of the all-time greatest American films ever, and certainly does not warrant a remake. The scene where Cliff and Sally admit to each other their affairs with Max is one of the greatest scenes in film history.
the only reason it's caught on to this reputation is because it lost Best Picture to the truly greatest American film of all time, THE GODFATHER (when, ironically, CABARET won every other Oscar it was nominated for).

You saying "my chances are crushed" made it sound like you thought it was never going to happen! Is right now the only time it could be done? It's not like there's some sort of time stamp on it. It could be done in the future.

You're right-Cabaret should not be remade. But the good thing about the Fosse movie is that it is so different than the actual 60's production. And the Mendes production was different than the original production and the movie. I think Cabaret is a good candidate for a film treatment, but maybe on something like HBO, where it would be in good hands.
