I'm not down with the Kate Winslet as Sally idea. Jane Krakowski would be very good, but, as previously mentioned on this thread, they're gonna need someone with star power. I LOVE the idea of having Patrick Wilson as Cliff, though!
Given her rave reviews in Rachel Getting Married, and knowing her singing voice, I think Anne Hathaway could make an interesting Sally. I like the idea of NPH as the emcee.
"It does me no injury for my neighbour to say there are 20 gods or no god. It neither picks my pocket, nor breaks my leg."
-- Thomas Jefferson
I can see a remake working, it's the sort of musical that would translate well on film. As for casting, I think they should get unknown, new faces for Sally and Cliff, then cast big names for The Emcee, Fraulein Schneider and Herr Schultz. With movie musicals, I think it's always good to get new talent for at least of couple of the roles.
Kate Winslet is an inspired choice for Sally. Maggie Gyllenhall and Katie Holmes would be interesting, too.
As far as the Emcee goes, I would like to see Hugh Jackman tackle it. Zeta-Jones would be a lovely Fraulein Kost. John Travolta for Schultz, Helen Mirren for Schneider, Daniel Craig for Ernst, aaaannnddd Jake Gyllenhaal for Cliff

Gyllenhall is boring, Holmes can't act her way out of a paperbag. I would hate to see her ruin this piece. Anne Hathaway is a good idea, she looks so much like Liza, but I don't think she is the best fit for the part either. I really stick to my original idea of Toni Collete or Kate Winslet, they are both so skilled. Jane Krakowski would be an inspired and daring choice.
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"
For whoever asked, yes the Kit Kat Klub = KKK was intentional. While technically about pre-war Germany, it was thematically a political commentary on the race problems/ white supremacy of 1960s America. It compared the KKK to the Nazis.
Anyway, I'd love to see a faithful film adaptation of the stage show.
For me, the most ideal candidate for Sally amongst the current crop of starlets would be Brittany Murphy, who was rumored to be atop Roundabout's wish list when they were hoping to bring the show back with Alan Cumming a couple years ago.
She has the tragic beauty, sufficient singing ability, and magnetic presence that would make for a fascinating choice for the role.
I also think Angelina Jolie (who nails the "damaged vixen" character like no other) would be fascinating, though her looks and age would seemingly work against her.
Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.
I like Brittany Murphy or Kate Winslet for Sally. I'm just not quite on the Anne Hathaway train yet, but then I've never heard her sing (except in the movie where she was a princess or something and sang "Somebody to Love" and it was only okay). And NPH in anything sounds like brilliance to me.
Wow, I never thought about it, but Brittany Murphy could make a really good Sally, especially if she could pull off a convincing British accent. As for the rest of the cast:
Cliff- Patrick Wilson Schneider- Hellen Mirren Shultz- Joel Grey Ludwig- John C Reilly Kost- Ana Gasteyer Emcee- who else but Alan Cumming?
You're reminding me of people you hear at the movies asking questions every ten seconds, "Who is that? Why is that guy walking down the street? Who's that lady coming up to him? Uh-oh, why did that car go by? Why is it so dark in this theater?" - FindingNamo on strummergirl
"If artists were machines, then I'm just a different kind of machine...I'd probably be a toaster. Actually, I'd be a toaster oven because they're more versatile. And I like making grilled cheese" -Regina Spektor
"That's, like, twelve shows! ...Or seven." -Crazy SA Fangirl
"They say that just being relaxed is the most important thing [in acting]. I take that to another level, I think kinda like yawning and...like being partially asleep onstage is also good, but whatever." - Sherie Rene Scott
I know that Sally should really be a third rate singer (which explains why she's stuck performing in such a s#!%hole), but I always prefer Sallys who can belt the hell out of those numbers. The Chicago movie worked around that issue so well with Roxie's great numbers only really happening in her imagination while she was actually mediocre in her real world performances.
Even though she seems a bit young to me for the role, I have to say that after seeing "Rachel Getting Married," I'd also cast a vote for Anne Hathaway.
If the audience could do better, they'd be up here on stage and I'd be out there watching them. - Ethel Merman
I think it would work very well if they did it like Chicago: the "show within Roxie's mind" concept, I mean. It would be pretty neat if we never actually knew if the Kit Kat Klub existed, or if it was just in Sally's head. I loved how the revival used the Emcee as an omnicient figure who was always lurking in the background, watching the other characters. That wouldn't translate to a film well at all, though.
Also, I think it would be a nice little tribute if Liza and Joel Grey played Schneider and Schultz.
I think that a remake would be wonderful, but it is not going to happen, not anytime soon, anyway. Neither is a stage revival. I had dinner with someone VERY involved in all of this last night, and to my dismay and his, he told me these are no longer in the works.
