Nielsen will be in Featured, but I agree she needs to win that category.
I really hope Amy Morton wins, but I think it will be Holland Taylor or Cicely Tyson.

She's considered Featured? She's barely off stage for the entire play! I figured if anyone would be featured it would be Weaver...

I hear Bette Midler was STUNNING in The Other Place.
When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain.

She was awful in it! That's why the put her in another play.

I think the general consensus has been that Nielsen is Featured...and I'm rooting for her to be placed there anyway as she will walk away with the category if she is.

Well whatever category she's in, she deserves it. I saw the play again today that phone call of hers is just....wow.

Oh I agree! Between Maggie Smith and the phone call the Tony is hers. It probably would bomb on the telecast, but I would love to see her perform that phone call on the Tonys.

Weaver is going to be Lead because she's above the title. Although I definitely agree that Nielsen is the Lead. She's the second name in the title!
My pick is definitely between Metcalf and Morton.

This is a really tough one. I haven't seen THE ASSEMBLED PARTIES, ...BOUNTIFUL, or ANN yet, but a handful of the performances on that list are not just nomination-worthy, but award-worthy.

Ellen Burstyn and Maggie Grace have been ruled as Featured for PICNIC.
Vanessa Williams is billed above the title for THE TRIP TO BOUNTIFUL. It's possible she'll be petitioned as Featured.
I think the five nominees will be:
Laurie Metcalf, THE OTHER PLACE
Amy Morton, WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINA WOOLF?
Holland Taylor, ANN
Cicley Tyson, THE TRIP TO BOUNTIFUL
Sigourney Weaver, VANYA AND SONYA AND MASHA AND SPIKE

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

Laurie Metcalf and Amy Morton feel like the leading contenders at the moment, with Cicely Tyson the possible spoiler.

I do think Midler will be nominated.

I'd be surprised if Weaver is nominated, actually.
And Nielsen will almost certainly be featured- despite being prominent in the show's artwork, she's not listed above the title. But she is doing some of the best work right now on Broadway.
I see it being:
Amy Morton
Laurie Metcalfe
Holland Taylor
Fiona Shaw
Jessica Hecht
And any of them could take it and not be at all a weak choice.
There are some incredible female performances in this season.

I have this sneaking suspicion that Hecht and Light will be remain Featured for THE ASSEMBLED PARTIES.

I don't think there's any way that Hecht would be Featured. I'm 100% positive she'll be leading and she very well could win. She's stunning.

I was just going to say the same. If I were MTC producers, I wouldn't petition to have Hecht moved. Keep her in the Featured category and she has a very strong chance of winning and gives Nielsen. It's not a stretch either, as THE ASSEMBLED PARTIES is very much an ensemble play. Leaving Hecht vs. Nielsen vs. Light in Featured and Metcalf vs. Morton vs. Tyson in Lead.

People may disagree, but I think Holland Taylor will take it.

But that's not what I said.

I can see why Holland Taylor COULD take it. But I don't think she necessarily will.

No list can be complete without Metcalf or Morton. Both gave stunning performances.
That being said, I haven't seen every performance so I think I would have to sit out of a complete list.
What fabulous work for and from women this year!
