Gothampc, did you have a brain tumor for breakfast? That's the most absurd list I could imagine. ScarJo? Yeah, friggin right.

The Tony Awards are no longer about merit. Every year they fight for ratings. Putting ScarJo in the mix means younger people might watch.
He doesn't eat brain tumors. Just a daily dose of racism and bigotry.

They already gave her a Tony and I don't remember there being a significant boost in the ratings that year.
Exactly. So aaaaaaaaanyway... back to the topic at hand.
The Nominating Committee does not take "higher ratings" into consideration. If she is not nominated, then the League can ask her to be a Presenter.
The ratings for the Tony Awards won't drastically increase because she's nominated.

And who are you? Isabelle Stevenson?
And who are you? Jim Colyer?
The realistic possible nominees are
Laurie Metcalf
Amy Morton
Cicely Tyson
Jessica Hecht
Bette Midler
Fiona Shaw
Holland Taylor
Sigourney Weaver
So that’s 8 women for 5 slots. Laurie Metcalf, Jessica Hecht, and Cicely Tyson are almost certainly going to get nominated IMO. (Amy Morton would be in this group if her show was still open. I’m not sure that the committee will nominate 2 women from closed shows, and Metcalf will get in over Morton.)
I think the nominees will be
Metcalf
Hecht
Tyson
Taylor
Either Morton or Shaw, depending on the reviews for Testament of Mary
With Midler and Weaver unlikely to make it to the final 5.
What about yvonne strahovski. She was amazing in golden boy.
She was ruled Featured.
This was truly was a great year for women in plays. My favorite performance was Kristine Nielsen but since she is considered featured these are my predictions for Leading Actress In A Play:
Amy Morton
Laurie Metcalf
Jessica Hecht
Fiona Shaw
Holland Taylor Or Cicely Tyson
I think either Amy Morton or Laurie Metcalf will win but you can't count anyone out at this point.

Remember that Jessica Hecht was already ruled Featured for Harvey earlier this season. Isherwood's review for her and the production were very strong so she is also contending for that performance this year. She could end up with two nominations regardless of which category she ends up in for Assembled Parties. But her Harvey eligibility must factor in to the decision.
Given that Neilsen, Light, and Strahovski seem to be front runners in a scattered field, Hecht could take a slot here for Harvey if she the lead in Assembled Parties or 2 slots here in some universe. Of course 2 performances in the same category could also be a liability which is also a consideration.
If she is the lead in Assembled Parties, I could see the Featured nominees being Neilsen for Vanya, Light for Assembled Parties, Strahovski for Golden Boy, Carrie Coon for Virginia Woolf, and Hecht for Harvey. The only spoilers feel like Judy Ivey whose performance was not unanimously well reviewed, or a Bountiful woman though their roles lack the impact of the others on the list.
Very interesting to see how this plays out but Hecht could really emerge this season. Deservedly IMHO.
I think the only definite is Metcalf. Whatever people thought of the play itself, her performance was astounding.
I don't think she'll win, but I wouldn't discount Chastain for a nomination. Her show made money and she's hot right now--hotter than ScarJo, two #1 movies already this year. And she's well-liked by pretty much everyone.

Judith Light for all the tonys!
Oh, I would be so, so happy if Chastain managed to get a nomination!
I agree Rocks, but I doubt it will happen. Honestly I won't be surprised if Hecht isn't nominated. Judith Light really walks away with that show, and the leading category is SO jam packed. I can't imagine Morton, Metcalf, and Tyson not being nominated. The other two spots will go to some combination of Taylor, Midler, and Shaw. I really liked Hecht in this, but I don't see her making the cut as leading. If they rule her featured, she'd definitely be nominated.
I don't know about that. The collective love in the community for Hecht is extremely strong right now and her reviews for PARTIES were fantastic. She's giving a tremendous performance that I think people will want to recognize.
I agree with that Jordan, but it still is a numbers game. If Shaw and Midler both get a lot of love from the critics, I'd give them an edge since their shows are less likely to get recognized in other categories. The Assembled Parties is certain to be nominated for Best Play and Best Featured Actress. Whom do you think will be left off the list in place of Hecht?

while heche was good it was not a phenomenal performance, Light ran circles around her and her awful accent.
How can anyone suggest that Chastain could even be considered for Best Actress? An embarrassing performance, to say the least.
Waiting to see how Midler and Shaw do with the critics this week. Would love to see Morton on this list, a really unusual take on Martha, but the play is too long gone.

I will be air-punching and happy-dancing if the award goes to either Amy Morton for Virginia Woolf or Laurie Metcalfe for The Other Place; both are two of the most enthralling dramatic performances I have ever seen.

I think Morton and Metcalf are the only locks and the other 3 slots are up for grabs. Tyson may have a slight edge because...well, she's Tyson at 88 and it's a tremendous role.
