I think Tyson may win. She wanted this role very much and while I've heard the rest of the production was uneven-she was said to be amazing. (I've always liked her and plan on getting there to see her.)
Loved Morton and Metcalfe, totally deserving, but with the critics no longer part of the Tony voting, and Shaw, Tyson and Midler still to come, it's anyone's game.
What day will nominations be announced?
Nominations are announced on 4/30 by Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Sutton Foster.
Morton, Metcalf, Tyson, Taylor and pick one more from the rest of a great field.
Personallym I'm rooting for Morton. Her performance was brilliant and she should have received one for Osage County.
In terms of the nominations, both Morton and Metcalf should be locks in spite of the fact that their shows have closed. It would, IN MY OPINION, be embarrassing for the committee if either one of these women were not nominated.
I'm still kicking myself over missing Metcalf so I can't comment on her, but Amy Morton and Tracy Letts gave the best performances I have seen in a play (well, Amy Morton gave my second favorite, the first being her performance as Barbara Weston). Does it really get better than Morton? The woman was mind-blowing in VIRGINIA WOOLF, underplaying the "big" moments, and turning the most unexpected moments into the best theatre you've seen. It was truly a masterpiece in reinterpreting a role you think has been played to death. I know the competition is strong (I missed Metcalf, Hecht and Tyson but they're fantastic in just about everything they do) but I'll be rooting passionately for Morton's name to be read that night.
Ray, to answer your question in a word, no.
Amy Morton should win, but I wouldn't be upset if another talented lady took it. The real crime will be when Tracy Letts loses. And I guarantee that because the show closed early in the season, he will. And he shouldn't.
Other than MATILDA winning Best Musical, this category is the biggest no brainer of the season. CICELY TYSON will win, hands down. See her. One of the greatest performances Broadway has ever seen.
Jessica Hecht
Laurie Metcalf
Amy Morton
Fiona Shaw
Cicely Tyson
The five nominees.
751guy nailed it. And if Hecht manages to remain in Featured, then Sigourney Weaver will take the slot.
If they place Judith Light in leading, I can see her taking a slot. Still not sure where she and Hecht will end up.
Light will definitely be featured.
JV92, you can say that again. And again. AND AGAIN. The performance Letts gave in this role was incomparable.

I'm thinking
Amy Morton *
Holland Taylor
Bette Midler
Fiona Shaw
Cicely Tyson
I'd be in cloud 9 if WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF? won the top acting prizes, I don't think I'll ever forget the night I saw them go at each other on that stage. They acted the play like it was written for them, I don't think I'll ever see a George and Martha like that in my lifetime.
It'd also be great if the supporting cast got some support but it's always so hard to get a slot in the featured categories, they are very competitive.

it's very strange Carrie Coon didn't show up at Drama League or Outer Critics...I'm predicting her but we'll see...I'm also predicting Vanessa Williams (showed up at both) Judith Ivey (raves for Heiress) Judith Light (Parties) and Kristine Nielsen for the win.

So what's AfterEight's excuse?
From what Playbill.com has posted about the Tony committee for eligibility, Clemence Poesy is not eligible for nomination in CYRANO DE BERGERAC, neither are Patti Lupone nor Debra Winger in THE ANARCHIST. For PICNIC, Maggie Grace, Elizabeth Marvel, Mare Winningham and Ellen Burstyn are all eligible for Featured Actress. So there goes half of your list already. The committee seems especially picky this season. Roles that were considered leads in past productions are now Featured, or not eligible at all due to the performance. Hope this helps!

The early reviews would seem to place Ms. Tyson as the likely winner. Several factors -- she gives a very good performance, she is old, she has never won a Tony and she is beloved.

I don't think anyone would have a problem with Miss Tyson snatching that Tony.

I am not sure where the info came from about the eligibility in JuanValjean's post but it is not accurate. It will be unlikely to bear on the outcome, but Patti and Debra are eligible in accordance with the opening night credits as is Clemence. .

I'm guessing JuanValjean read the various Playbill articles on the eligibility determinations and didn't notice the clause about all other eligibilities being consistent with the opening night billing.

Riedel weighs in. He completely omitted Cicely Tyson, who is going to win. And Amy Morton, who will also be nominated.

^ Of course you're right about both Tyson and Morton. I think Metcalf and Shaw will both slide in as well. Who will be the fifth is the real question.
Why do I get the weird feeling Morton will be omitted from the nominations...?
