I'm surprised by how little this beautiful show is discussed, but after the success of Fun Home, Tesori should think about bringing this show back. After seeing The Color Purple, I think John Doyle could do some wonderful things with this show (as long as they don't play their instruments). Uzo Aduba would make a great Caroline.

I think I mentioned this a while ago, but I spoke with Jeanine Tesori a few months ago and she said she'd been speaking to Kushner a LOT about bringing the show back. They both say that it's time for a revival.

I'd point to Roundabout, but one of the show's creators is a woman, so probably a lost cause.

The show is amazing. Randomly, I made an online friend on a tv forum because she was always quoting from it (and she seemed shocked that I recognized the quotes).
A commercial revival would make zero sense. But I think it would be worth having a non-commercial run, and it really deserves to be seen in good productions outside of NYC. I had to read a lot of Kushner's works for a survey essay I wrote last year, pretty much everything published, and I think it's his strongest work outside of Angels.

Look at their programming. They're certainly part of the problem. They've only produced a couple of shows by women after facing enormous pressure from the community and arts activists.

I don't think I need to see Audra do this show, unless she plays the Moon. I'd rather wait a few years and see Cynthia Erivo take a stab at it.

I don't know that I would want a Doyle version of the show although it would be interesting to see what e would do with it. The show wasn't really a "big" show. I felt it was already kind of scaled down. Of course it could be scaled down more but I liked what was done originally. That is just my opinion.
Got to see it on Brodaway a few days before opening and found it to be the most thrilling afternoon at the theatre, next to the original production of Sweeney Todd, that I have experienced. I have also thought about a revival but agree a commercial one might not work unless a big name was attached to it. I would also like to see Wolfe at the helm of the revival.
To the OP, the show pops up a lot in treads here and is loved by many BWW members. Just search it, stuff should pop up.

Audra is brilliant, but there are other black actors out there besides her. Uzo is actually a really interesting suggestion, but I feel like she's slightly too young for it. Regardless, it would be great for this to come back again.

An off-Broadway revival with someeone like LaChanze, Renee Elise Goldberry, or Cynthia Erivo would be great and actually plausible, but if it played on Broadway you need someone at least at the level of fame of Uzo Aduba.
What about Kerry Washington in a few years? She was involved in workshops of "In The Heights" so she must have the vocal chops plus she's fantastic on "Scandal."

Funny thing, is that I already recast the show in my mind with the cast from the Color Purple revival. I think Cynthia would make a lovely Emmie (I feel so many similarities between her and Anika), Danielle or Jennifer playing Caroline or Dot interchangeably , Patrice Convington as the moon and the church ladies as the radio. It could so work...in my head atleast. Also I would be interested in seeing r&b singer Jill Scott take on the role of Caroline, I know she was the soloist in Rent, and she does have a strong theatre background. But nobody in my opinion could ever match Tonya as Caroline. And even though I would love to see her reprise the role (because I didn't see her in the original company) I'm sure most people would like to see a newer actresses take on the role.

Vocally Audra could do it 8 times a week. I know Tonya struggled. As much as I love Renee I don't see her in this at all. I could for sure Cynthia doing it down the road or better yet Audra and Cynthia in the same production!
