What is child wrangling. Isn't it the person who keeps the kids quiet backstage at big shows involving kids? And they have to sit in the playroom with all the toys and stuff?

Pretty much. Miss Saigon (B'way and tours) actually credited a "Tam wrangler" in the playbill. :)

There used to be a terrible child wrangler at Hairspray. But she was let go not too long ago because she was supposedly horrible to the actor playing Little Inez. Now, they cast Inez as a youthful looking sixteen year old or older so as to avoid requiring a backstage babysitter.

The Inez in Las Vegas was not very Little. She was maybe 25 years old and looked it!

...What happened next, was stranger still, a woman breathless and afraid, appeared out of the night, completely dressed in white. She had a secret she would tell, of one who had mistreated her. Her face and frightened gaze, my mind cannot erase...But then she ran from view. She looked so much like you...

Not that young?! The Tams were little girls and boys between 4 and 6 years old.

A child wrangler is a Stage Manager. You make sure the kids are alright during the performance. You take them to their press apearances and all that good stuff.

They're not always the stage manager.

I was led to believe that you must join the union to do this. Making you a SM (although you dont call the show).

i really doubt she was let go because she was bad...I certainly never heard that particular rumor. Its probably far more likely that she was let go because they had tried an adult Inez on the tour, figured it worked and decided paying one adult was easier and cheaper than paying a child and their keeper.

Yes -- a child wrangler is in charge of the kids and they stay in the playroom with them. They can do anything from helping the kids with lines, blocking, taking notes for their scripts, cleaning up after kids, taking notes on if a kid's prop or costume breaks/wrips for the custume suspervisor ... they also lead the kids to the wings ... and also, they do stuff like the press conferences or whatever with the kids.

In film the "wrangler" is often a teacher or "nanny" type w experience in manageing and being RESPONSIBLE for young and (not so young ) performers. Also need to be familiar w the regs of whatever state their in for the limits on childen's employment.
