Coming to the city in September - need your help to pick shows

Hi Guys,


I'll be in town between the 1st of September till the 5th in the morning (Tuesday to Saturday, but I won't make it in time to see a show on Saturday), that leaves time for 3-4 shows


I really want to see Hamilton, Something Rotten, hand to god and Fun home (in that order) and with the extra Wednesday matinee It wasn't suppose to be a problem - BUT that Wednesday there's 2 shows I want to see in 54 below (the You're a good man Charlie Brown and a concert by Barret Wilbert weed.


My questions are:


1. Would you drop a Broadway show from the above to go see the shows at 54 below (if so which one?) keep in mind that I'm in new york once every 3-4 years.


2. is there maybe an off-Broadway show that I could add to the mixture that plays in different hours? I saw that 'The 39 steps' is quite flexible, should I go see it?


3. Is it even possible to get tickets to Hamilton? or are they fully booked already?

Tickets for Hamilton: possible depending on how much you are willing to spend. I had a friend that got 7th row center only a week ahead of time through telecharge (or is it ticketmaster?) Stubhub is also a possibility....but that, too, will cost you.



To me, I'd rather see a show than a gig at 54 below...but I'm sue there are folks who disagree. Only you can prioritize your wish list.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

I wouldn't drop any of your shows listed except maybe Something Rotten. I am in the minority but I didn't find it all that funny. I did get the jokes and references to other musicals, but just didn't care for it.


Go see Hamilton, but good luck getting tickets though.

I guess that depends on how badly you want to see the 54 Below shows. They won't be around the next time you visit, so if you want to go, this is your chance. (Then again, there's no guarantee that the Broadway shows will still be around the next time you visit, but you're more likely to have other opportunities to see them.) 54 Below also has a $25 food/drink minimum, so that's something to keep in mind too. Still less money than a full-price Broadway ticket, but that might make a difference, depending on how much you want to spend on food during your trip.

I saw The 39 Steps a few days ago. I didn't love it as much as I loved the production at New World Stages, but I still thought it was very funny and worth seeing. Check it out if you can (or don't, I'm not your boss), but it's okay if you can't fit it into your schedule.

It's possible, but extremely difficult. The show offers a lottery for $10 tickets, which is worth a try, and you can also try your luck with the cancellation line. Like dramamama611 said, it depends on how much you want to spend. Fun Home tickets are also very difficult to get, but they offer standing room.

Whatever you decide, I hope you have a super fun trip! Also, I love your username.

If you check Ticketmaster a few days before and up until the day you want to see Hamilton, additional tickets are sometimes released. (It is at the moment sold out.) You can also try cancellation, lottery, or standing room on the day of the performance.

Keep Rotten. Was in the minority re Fun. A friend of ours told us Fun has a great story which would make it a great play but the music did nothing for him . I concur. I am glad I saw it but did not go ga ga over it.


On The Town is fabulous. An American In Paris we enjoyed but liked OTT better. No problem whatsoever re getting OTT tickets. No idea if OTT will be here for your visit as it is struggling & may have closed by then.

Aside from what everyone else said, I would keep hand to God. My favorite play I've seen on Broadway in a long time.



Tickets for that are easy to come by at TKTS. So if you're not able to get tickets to Hamilton and/or fun home ahead of time (it's going to be difficult as others have said) you could try the lotto/standing room and get tickets to this if unsuccessful.

Taste is personal. I loved Something Rotten and Fun Home is the best show I've seen on Broadway, ever. Hated, hated, hated Hand to God.


Others have different views.


What shows that you've seen in the past (either on Broadway or elsewhere) have you liked and not liked? Knowing this might help with recommendations.

Last time I was in town I saw Follies and anything goes and Sister act which I loved, I think that just because it's a Broadway show I'll be happy and enjoy it but since I only have a few shows to go to I'm trying to find the best ones that are worth seeing

As Crazy NooNooHead, you're gambling on whether any of those shows will be around in the next 3-4 years. You should also consider whether it's important to you to see the original cast members. I will point out that 54 Below often puts videos of performances online but not for all performances so again, it's a gamble.
