Morton and Letts don't have much chance in their categories, but what about her? I've been really out of the loop this year. I guess my question is - has the show been closed too long to win anything?

I think she has the best shot if they don't want to give Judith Ivey her (3rd) win or Judith Light her (2nd) win in that category.
I haven't seen THE ASSEMBLED PARTIES yet, but based solely on the buzz I've heard, Judith Light is a formidable competitor in the category. I could also see it going to Shalita Grant, who is just wonderful in VANYA...
I highly doubt Coon has any shot at a win and I imagine the production will walk away from the Tonys empty-handed. Which is a real shame, considering how fantastic it was.
Why don't you think Letts has much of a chance? Everyone did nothing but rave about his performance? Sure he's up against Hanks and Lane but do you think one of them will automatically get it cause they're Hanks and Lane? I'm not saying they didn't get excellent reviews for their performance as well but I think the comments about Letts were just outstanding.
I think Letts has more of a shot than we think he does. Coon, though, I think won't win.
I'd agree that the Judiths and Shalita have better shots of winning. Even Condola. It's great she was even remembered. Winning would be a great feat in this category, I think.
Sigh. The curse of being a fall show, I guess. Which makes me think it isn't looking good for Glass Menagerie.
I think Hanks will take it over Letts. I was SURE Alan Cumming was going to win. I don't want to talk about it.
Even if Cumming was nominated, he wouldn't have won. Hanks has the award all but tied up, if you ask me.
Glass Menagerie features more names and/or people who have been nominated and won awards in the past. I think they'll somehow be more memorable in voters' minds.
And I disagree, I think Cumming would have had a shot.

I still think some voters will be uneasy about Hanks after the way everyone bitched in 2010 when nearly ever acting award was given to a film megastar. But I could be wrong.
I do like Tom Hanks a lot so good for him if he wins! He was quite good.
I think this is Judith Light's award this year. She's just so damn incredible.

Two years in a row...that would be exciting. And yeah, she's pretty great.
Tom Hanks didn't get the kind of reviews Letts got. But Letts' show didn't do the kind of business Hanks' show does. So hm. And Hanks is still running. And Hanks is Hanks.
I haven't seen the women nominated except for Coon but she completely held her own, she helped create the magic of the evening. I loved her performance so much, I wouldn't mind seeing her take the award, but really I'm just very happy she got recognized.
I thought she took a part that's usually kind of a throw away and made it really interesting on par with the rest.

I think that category is Judith Light's to loose. She's amazing and in three short years has went from okay television actress to Broadway star. To get back to the original response, Carrie Coon was flat out amazing, in a role I don't normally care much for. And I don't think she'll win but I'm not counting her out just yet. But there's also love for Condola Rashad, who's proven herself to be a worthy successor of a theater actress to her mother.
Right now, I'd put my money on Judith Light. She is fantastic and has the advantage of having a large role. It's really a co-leading role (in my opinion, if Hecht is leading, so is Light).
Carrie Coon's performance was nothing short of genius and it would be very, very well-deserved if she wins. However, as everyone here knows and has already said, Tony voters have very short attention spans and often forget about anything that happens in the fall.
If it were my award to give, it would go to Coon. Absolutely. She was just brilliant in a role that could easily have been outshone by her co-stars.

"a part that's usually kind of a throw away"
Obviously you've never seen Sandy Dennis.
I don't think ANY of those roles in ...VIRGINIA WOOLF? are throwaways.
Right, with only 4 Actors, you better not have any throwaways.
Condola Rashad is such an incredible talent, but I imagine the Tony voters will take a "she'll have her time" type of approach to her performance this season. She's a delight in BOUNTIFUL, and her scenes with Tyson are probably the best in the show, but I imagine she'll be around for a very long time.
On another note, the fact that Richard Kind is nominated for THE BIG KNIFE, while the exceptional Madison Dirks got shut out is something I will never understand. Ugh.

I think RippedMan was referring to the role of Thelma in The Trip to Bountiful played by Condola Rashad.
Eva Marie Saint won the Theatre World award for originating that role onstage and on tv. Rebecca de Mornay played it in the movie (lol) but usually it's a throwaway compared to the Vanessa Williams role that won Jo Van Fleet a Tony. (played by Eileen Heckhart and Carlin Glynn in other versions)
So props to Condie for making that part her own!
I meant Woolf.
See an amateur production of the play. That's my only exposure to the play before this recent version.
