Could Connick take the TONY?

Once again..with the Tony's its not always about who "deserves" to win, but "who can sell the most tickets if they win"...since we all know that a large portion of the Tonys is about marketing Broadway. Personally, I would like to see Cerveris win, but I have an inkling that it will probably be John Lloyd Young -- since he is doing a great job in the show that is the biggest commercial hit of the season.
Harry Connick, Jr. will garner some votes for his performance but also for his "star power" (since he is a name that has proven to be a bankable commodity with the sell-out status of Pajama Game) and for hopes that a Tony Award will make him want to come back and do another show soon. I have a feeling that if Connick wasn't leaving the show two weeks after the awards that he might actually even win it. He would then meet all of the credentials: big star=hit show=Tony Award=more future tickets sold. The problem is that there aren't many tickets left to sell for PJ Game while he is still in the show....so the award will most likely go to JLY.
Obviously this isn't always the case, so there is still a chance for a surprise come June 11th. I would be happy if any of these three win the award and would not feel cheated. It is nice to have a year where so many of the categories can go in different directions and still seem correct.

I wish there was a three way tie.
1. Young
2. Cerveris
3. Martin
But Cerveris has won Tonys before. John has not. This is John's first juicy role on Broadway. I think he deserves it the most.
I AM ROOTING FOR JLY.
But if any of them won I would be happy.
If Harry wins I will be depressed.

People are going to buy tickets to Jersey Boys whether or not John Lloyd Young wins the Tony. Hopefully the Tony voters will realize this when they are casting their ballot. (I just recommended Jersey Boys to a co-worker this morning actually!)
Cerveris deserves this award.

Both deserve the award.
Maybe it would go to both Cerveris and Young.
That would make me do a happy dance around my apt.

I don't know...for some reason it feels like the scales are starying to tip in Cerveris's favor. Many critics have noted that, while JLY gave a great performance, that Cerveris' role is far more difficult.
Psst...ever fling with a broadway actor/actress

Posted: 6/5/06 at 11:34amActually, Corine2, if it were a tie, I would not be disappointed. When was the last time a tie happened? When Leslie Uggams and Patricia Routledge tied in the late 60s?
#32re: Could Connick take the TONY?
Posted: 6/5/06 at 11:36amI'm with you Corine...a three-way tie would be GLORIOUS! But I'd rather see Connick Jr. as part of that tie than Martin.

I still think that John Lloyd Young will get it.

Posted: 6/5/06 at 1:52pmThe question is not could he take it. It's should he. Anyone could pull off a surprise at the Tony's -- it's just a matter of whether or not they deserve it, which I don't think Connick, when compared to the others, does.

I would rather see Martin get it in a three way tie.
He is adorable in Drowsy and it was his idea. I loved him in Drowsy, he just makes you want to hug him.
And when he won a Drama Desk he had the most adorable speech about his wife.
John did that for Alison too! I love all three of them.
Harry is talented but he was my 4th choice and Stephen sort of bored me.
I loved the Wedding Singer but all the smaller roles interested me: Felicia was hysterical. Kevin Cahoon was faboo. But Stephen was dull dull dull.
I want John to win for Alison. She will be soooooo happy!

I love Michael too. But, I want them both to win.
Praying for a tie. All three of these men deserve this award.
They are all sensational actors.
I just think John is the hardest working man on Broadway. Try hitting those high notes 8 times a week.

Posted: 6/5/06 at 4:06pmWhile I know Ceveris will win (and should), there's alway a slighty possibility of Connick winning. He was absolutely excellent and his acting wasn't too shabby as people have said. I hope and pray John Lloyd Young doesn't win. I'd rather not see a jukebox musical win, no matter how good it is.

Posted: 6/5/06 at 4:12pmsomething tells me Michael and JLY may split voters and essentially cancel eachother out.....leaving Connick with the Tony (an upset? Perhaps. But crazier things have happened)

10 times a week, jerseyboyslover? I'm only counting 8 shows a week...

I think had not so many Connick reviews described his acting as "wooden", he could have had a shot. But the race is clearly between Young and Cerveris, with Young probably in the lead.
"I'd rather not see a jukebox musical win, no matter how good it is."
That just doesn't make any sense. And Jersey Boys is not a "jukebox musical", a term coined on the success of Mamma Mia, though the genre previously existed (Play On, Return to the Forbidden Planet). The majority of the songs are not integrated into the plotline through the lyrics (i.e. Mamma Mia, All Shook Up, Play On), but rather they are recreations of the performances in a biographical book on a particular artist or group (i.e. Buddy, Elvis). There is a differnce.
Regardless, a musical is a musical whether the songs were written for the stage or not.

Agreed, Mister Matt. After all, Crazy for You won last decade and wouldn't that be considered in today's lingo a "jukebox musical"? In addition, many revues have won the Best Musical Tony.
I have heard that Harry is a bit stiff. That alone would make a voter choose someone else over him. That's not to say that he's not putting on a good show.

<< "Well, I've seen both Sweeney Todd & Jersey Boys and I'd have to say JLY should definitly win. Sweeney is the better show, but JLY gives the better performance. He IS Frankie Valli." >>
Um, okay. But Michael Cerveris IS Sweeney Todd, too. He embodies this role with incredible passion and subtle nuance. I don't think you can say Young gives the better performance. They're both pretty incredible if you ask me.
This is the problem with these awards. It's like Patti LuPone said on the Broadway.com video, you can't compare roles...put the competitors in the same role and then you have a competition. Cerveris and Young have both mastered their roles in their respective shows and are giving two of the most award-worthy performances on Broadway 8 times a week. If you ask me,(which no one did, lol) it's pretty damn difficult to pick a winner when you have two top-notch performers at the top of their game in two roles as vastly different and challenging in different ways as Franki Valli and Sweeney Todd.
Oh, well. Here's to both of those darn good guys! =)

Could Connick take the tony? In my opinion there is no way in hell he will win. There is just too much competition from the better candidates in the category.
It's, as has been discussed ad nauseum, between Cerveris and JLY. I would love for Bob Martin to win as his performance affected me the most of any of the men. He was charming, moving, and hillarious. However his role was the least difficult, the least musical, and was written by himself. He will not win. Cerveris could win on basis of roll difficulty, and JLY could win on the basis of being new star. Tim will tell.
