Do the Tony's often have upsets the way the Oscars do? Like, the Adrien Brody type upsaet when the Dark Horse candidate took home the award?

Posted: 6/6/06 at 9:46pmI was really shocked when Bill Irwin won Best Actor (Play) last year. I think he was a dark horse/upset.

Leeping my fingers crossed for John Lloyd Young. It couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

he he
uhm, well, my vote goes to Harry because he's not playing himself - he has created a really interesting, quirky, almost brooding character who happens to be charming. I REALLY thought his work was wonderful. His singing was great - but that's not what left the biggest impression on me - he carried that show with Meg, Roz, Michael and Joyce... the rest were great too - but he did a spectacular job.

I've never swooned before...his talented renditions of each song in the score is above any performance I've known (except for maybe George Hearn in Sunset Blvd. No. even above that, too.) His leg injury made is performance tentative, but he gets points for going on with the show as well.
Harry's worthy, and if it goes his way, I'll jump out of my chair with a big smile on my face. If it goes to any of the other contenders, I'll be smiling big for them, too, but I'll still be seated. Oh, but if it's Bob Martin, I'll be crying too.
EDIT: That might make for an interesting thread. For whom would you have tears of joy should they win a Tony on Sunday?

"Connick will definitely win the Tony because the voters want to encourage him to remain on Broadway."
Connick needs to return to Broadway so there can be a Harry on Broadway Act 2 recording

O my goodness, that really bothers me! Harry, make another Broadway CD already! Haha, sorry, OCD.

Ahimsa- stole my words. Entirely swoon-worthy.
This shall be such an interesting tony awards...
Everyone deserves it... Some people might have "edges" or whatever, whther they did the role already, or had back-ups or whatever.
Actress will be JUST as interesting!

Answer one: YES! If you mean TimeOutNewYork. That he could take if he plopped down his money.
Answer Two: YES! If he mugs John Llyod Young and takes it from his hands.
Sorry, he may be sexy to some- but from what I have seen in clips- he is not acting. He is flexing his bod and singing a score that has been lowered and fiddled with to suit him.
He was dreadful on WILL AND GRACE and even worse in SOUTH PACIFIC. If he sells seats, power to him. But do not confuse what he is doing as "acting."

Posted: 6/7/06 at 10:05pmWell, if we're basing things on the tv version of South Pacific, then Glenn Close needs to give her Sunset Tony back.

I heard something interesting recently about JLY. He doesn't believe he is actually a very good singer. He believes, much like Jane Horrocks who was extraordinary on stage in LITTLE VOICE, that he is simply an actor with a really good ability to mimic.
I don't believe we will see him doing a string of musicals after JERSEY BOYS.
My personal crystal ball? I think JLY will win the Tony, and I think he'll probably play Valli on film and he will go on to more film/tv.
Just my theory. Totally not based on anything but gut feeling.

"if he mugs JLY"
Well there's no competition there.
Harry would knock that little falsetto guy on his JERSEY butt.
I agree with JLY that he is more of a mimic than a singer.
I doubt there will be a movie of JERSEY BOYS soon,
look how long it took to make DREAMGIRLS and that was a much better show.
( But we haven't seen JLY without his shirt, well maybe at BROADWAY BARES)
#87re: Could Connick take the TONY?
Posted: 6/7/06 at 11:43pmIm not saying it will be a movie of JERSEY BOYS. There are a couple of Frankie Valli based film/tv projects in the works...

well in that case,
wouldn't it be a "bad move" to pigeonhole himself into playing one role?

"Connick will definitely win the Tony because the voters want to encourage him to remain on Broadway. By stroking his ego with a Tony, they are saying to him, "We want you to stay around". "
-If this was true, I believe they would have nominated Julia Roberts. I don't believe it has any weight on the compitition. They may give a nomination so they'll show up to the awards show and boost ratings, but they will almost never win. My money is on Ceveris.

How would he get pigeon-holed playing Frankie Valli? Meaning that all he will be considered for is pop singers from the 1960s who sang in falsetto? I don't think so.
People are excited about his performance because he is able to bring the character to life with such startling accuracy. If he were to play Valli in a film or TV project, I would think he would get the same kind of accolades awarded Judy Davis as Judy Garland or Joaquin Phoenix as Johnny Cash.
It could only open doors for him.
#91re: Could Connick take the TONY?
Posted: 6/8/06 at 12:25amJudy Davis and Joaquin had Major careers before they played those roles and I doubt either would repeat them for a TV movie.

Judy Davis as Judy Garland was a tv movie...
Perhaps a better example would be Tammy Blanchard. Her spot on portryal of young Judy Garland in that movie is really what jump started her adult career.

Okay, I know everyone is going to hate me for this and think I'm an idiot. But I don't get all the hoopla over Michael Cerveris, I didn't like him in Assassins either, I think he was miscast in both shows. I hated the production of Sweeney Todd, I hated Patti Lupone as Mrs. Lovett, she sang so many wrong notes I kept biting my lip so hard I drew blood. I know that score so well. One of my friends said well it doesn't matter if she sings wrong notes, she's Patti Lupone! In my mind that's all the more reason she SHOULD sing all the right notes! I don't understand why people are so wild about this production.
Maybe people have just jumped on this bandwagon because they think it's the cool thing to do. All of a sudden Angela Lansbury and Len Cariou (and George Hearn) and Hal Prince suck and oh this new version is so avant-garde and brilliant and...well I think it's all bull****. As for the Tony, I really like JLY from Jersey Boys but of course he won't win because all the artsy-fartsy people will vote for Cerveris.

Cerveris wont win because he just won; and there is actually less support for SWEENEY among voters than even I would have thought. I adore the production and still believe it will walk away with multiple Tony wins, but it does not have the huge support in the actual theatrical community that it does on this message board. I'd say Connick has a better shot at winning than Cerveris.
The Tonys are actually going to be very evenly distributed this year, I think.

Wow, pretty harsh, Lucy. No one is discrediting the original production.

What about when Idina won? Tonya Pinkins and Donna Murphy were both previous winners.

Sorry. It's just that a lot people I know were saying stuff like "oh thank God she didn't play it like Angela Lansbury" and "it was so nice to see people actually acting in this show for a change"! Really! I adore Angela Lansbury & the original cast but of course I think there is always room for more than one interpretation of a role. But I still hated Patti Lupone and her two voices! LOL
Sweeney Todd is very special to me because I played Mrs. Lovett in a regional theater in Boston 15 years ago and was named one of Boston's 10 Best Actresses that year by the Boston Globe. It was directed by a dear, dear friend of mine who died suddenly 5 years ago. So you all will have to forgive me, I'm overprotective of the show in general. (sigh)
