Could a revival of Peter Pan like this work on Broadway?

Apparently, Peter Pan will have a Brazilian premiere, with updated stuff. I thought it was kinda refreshing. What do you think? Could a revival like this work on Broadway?

I like it but 2 things:

We don't say uga wuga anymore

and Peter Pan should be a woman. Taking a female role away from an Actress is a no no.

This was fantastic. Even on video you felt the build up of the number. Wow!

Different steps, but very much modeled on the Cathy Rigby production's choreography, right down to the drumsticks.

We still say UGA WUG.

One production decided to change it. (The LIVE production with Allison Williams.)

I’ve seen it twice since then. Both had original lyrics.

Really enjoyed the clip.  Would pay big bucks to see this production.  I am quite confident that Broadway would not grind to a stop if a guy played the role of "Peter".

While the songs are written for an alto, we do know that Peter Pan is male, yes?

I wish that Fly would make it to Broadway. I absolutely adored the Dallas Theater Center production, but nothing has happened since.

I'm just not sure Peter Pan is all that engaging of a musical. It's kind of like Alice in Wonderland where there isn't much of an actual plot and more like stuff just happens. But I'd be interested in a big budget spectacle version.

This choreography is a poorly ripped version of the Rigby production choreographed by Patti Colombo. It has variations that are different, but it’s very clearly more than inspired by it, to the point that the production should be paying Colombo and giving her a “based on choreography by” credit.

I’m sure the streets will be lined with protestors claiming it is a hate crime for a male actor to play a male character. Meanwhile, they probably don’t realise that musical theatre is one of the few ventures where females absolutely have the best roles, songs and are by far the most talented performers. My take on it is because female characters have a greater range of expression available to them than male characters. Being a female leading lady in the musical theatre is a wonderful privilege.

You're not sure? Maybe take a hint from all the Broadway, Hollywood, etc versions. I'd say it's track record would indicate a few billion people find it engaging.

Why, exactly? Fealty to an old pantomime trend of casting women in "pants" roles that even J.M. Barrie initially wanted to buck? At what point did you miss the dialogue where Peter says he wants "always to be a little boy and to have fun"?

Personally, I dunno if I'd go as far as casting a young man as Peter as opposed to an actual boy (while a young man might have more experience as a performer, such casting does raise unfortunate implications about the subtext of children being abducted from their nursery and taken to a place "as irresistible and horrific as a nasty daydream," as one of Barrie's contemporary critics once put it), but I don't see any reason why such casting wouldn't work.

(Besides, it's been done at least once in Manhattan -- Jack Noseworthy covered that track in Jerome Robbins' Broadway, no?)

The practicalities of anatomy are part of it too- it's not at all impossible, but definitely uncomfortable for a fully developed male to spend extensive time in that harness being flown about. For a few minutes is one thing, but to do an entire extensive show like that is not comfortable.

So develop a new harness, it's the 21st century for Christ's sake. Get the Spider-Man people on it, and prepare for an uptick in insurance premiums.

Papermill cast a male in the role when they did the show in the 90's. Granted, it was a Robert Johanson vanity production, but still. 

Francis Jue played it regionally somewhere as well (I think St. Louis? Maybe the MUNY?).

I'm sure there are other examples.  It's not unprecedented.

There already are newer harnesses. The Peter Pan 360 tour had harnesses that clipped to each side of their hips.

Peter Pan is and should be a Woman.

The character of Peter Pan is a male boy.  The Peter Pan of the Charlap & Leigh production was originally written to be played by an adult female.  If it's not prohibited in the licensing, there's no reason the role couldn't be played by a male who can sing it.

Personally, I have little to no interest to ever see the role of Peter played by a man. That said, this show is one of my all-time favorites so I’m sure I would end up seeing any production (and this one looks thrilling) that came to town.

i would agree.  I saw the Bway production as a child with Sandy Duncan and even at that young age couldn't understand why Peter was a old woman (that's how a kid pretty much perceives anyone years older than them) and as an adult never understood why a male isn't playing this role.  There has been a number of roles switched from male to female that I can think of (Leading Player in Pippin, Bobbi in Company (soon to be)) so there is precedent. I"m not a big fan of the show in general however.
