Cyndi Lauper the next Audrey in Little Shop???

From Michael Musto's column in the Voice coming out today:

"Moving on to a drag inspiration, I hear crinoline-wearing kook Cyndi Lauper will most likely be the next Audrey in Broadway's Little Shop of Horrors, casting that's so perfect it's amazing it took so long for the "True Colors" gal to be up there singing "Somewhere That's Green." But spies say someone that's Greene—namely Ellen Greene, the original Audrey—wouldn't mind another chance at the role, though producers have been resistant. What horrors!"

My god, I wasn't crazy about this production of Little Shop, but even I might be tempted to return if Lauper was in it.

Did anyone see her in that pop salute to Broadway thing on Bravo? I love Cyndi, but she needs a LOT of help with her acting to pull this off.

I think she would be the person to make this role her own, but they would have to cast Joey Bishop and not Joey Fatone.

I don't know if she needs that much help, she has won an Emmy for her recurring role on "Mad About You." I really like Audrey being much older than Seymour, it adds a weird Oedipul layer to the show. It could really work. And if the fabulous Ellen Greene wants back in the role...let her. She certainly couldn't be worse than the ever forgetable Kerry Butler.

Cyndi,or Ellen I'd see it again!! But a question isn't Ellen Greene also a bit older than Mr.Fatone?

Lauper is 50 and Ellen Greene is 54. Personally I think an older Audrey is totally OK and adds some interesting dimensions to the show.

Thanks for the confirmation Margo! I thought she was around her mid fifties.

I don't really have a problem with an older Audrey, either. My problem would be the dynamics between Greene/Lauper and Fatone. He just does nothing for me and as bland as he is would totally be overshadowed by the Audrey. How about someone like Allen Cumming? Someone with a bit of a personality?

Ellen Greene looks amazing for her age as does Miss Cyndi. While seeing Cyndi in the role would be amazing, seeing Ellen sing those songs live would be a dream come true. But this is all just a rumor, correct?

Yes, it is a rumor at this point, but having read Musto since the 80's, I've come to realize, he's very rarely wrong on these things (he's got great sources all over the place).

re: Cyndi Lauper the next Audrey in Little Shop???

I have seen Cyndi Lauper multiple times in concert. She is a heck of a performer! The last time I saw her, she performed from the seat of a wheelchair. I don't think Cyndi would call in sick too many times if given a role as a leading actress on Broadway. I believe she would be a lot of fun as Little Shop's new Audrey. Cyndi certainly wouldn't have to stretch too much to get the accent of the character down, would she??!!

re: Cyndi Lauper the next Audrey in Little Shop???

Has anyone seen the movie she did with Jeff Goldblum - Vibes? Its cute - nothing phenomenal, but there's a great moment late in the film when her character is "channeling" the spirit of the dead mother of the bad guy, and she sings a swedish (I think) lullaby - its absolutely beautiful. Her voice is better at that moment than I have ever heard it before or since, just simple and sweet and it convinces me that if she gets this role, she will be wonderful.
"I don't really get the ending, all i can go with is when after several months,Judith saw Pat sang, and later she kissed him on the toilet, after that the story back to where Pat went down from the stage after he'd sung, and he went to the italian lady.I just don't get it,what Judith exatcly meant when he kissed Pat that she had seen, and did Pat end up together with The Italian Lady? Please help me,thank u very much!" Quote from someone on IMDB in reference to a movie he/she didn't understand. Such grammar!

Sorry, but I really cannot stomach Ellen Greene in that part again...her singing voice gives me a headache. It would be interesting to see Lauper though, that's for darn sure. Her and Fatone would just make the most BIZARRE couple, which is almost worth the ticket in itself.
