Say a new Broadway Theatre was to be built. Where would you put it? What size theatre do you think broadway needs more of? Would it be modern (Marquis/Gershwin) or old in theme (Majestic/Broadway)? What or who would you name it after? If you had to, which Broadway Theatre would you tear down to built this one?

Name it for Sondheim. Give it a real, full-size orchestra pit.

I'd like to see a theatre named after Cole Porter before Sondheim.

My theatre would be the size of the Gershwin, but in the style of the Broadway or New Amsterdam. Full orchestra pit, balcony seating, extended mezzanine like the Palace.

I just described an opera house...*slaps self*

Make sure there are three ladies' rooms for every men's room. And leg room between the rows...

My theater would have a rubber hand attached to each seat that is programmed to slap the rude theatergoers.

"The Neverland Theatre"

with the theatre design being unique. Not modern or classic, but a look of the Neverland island (but the stage and front of the theatre begins to look more traditional).

It would house children's theatre and fairytale shows, such as PETER PAN, SEUSSICAL THE MUSICAL, INTO THE WOODS, A YEAR WITH FROG AND TOAD, the new CAM JANSEN musical, ONCE UPON A MATTRESS, etc.

This would be the theatre EVERYONE knows they can always take their children to go to see a show, no questions asked.

One performance a week, we would have a rule: no one under the age of 12 admitted. This way, the adults can enjoy the shows without having to be bothered by the children.

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

I'd also like to add that the Gershwin is waaaaay too cavernous -- much prefer intimate theatres w/ excellent site lines -- ahhhh...these little fantasies really perk up the day.
