I saw this the other day. I'm not sure why Thenardier is beyond Thunderdome. And the dubstep seems jarring...but I admit that it could have been set up earlier in the production and pays off.
However, the rest seems totally intriguing in a good way.

Posted: 7/18/14 at 12:25pmI don't hate it. But modern dress also makes things just less exciting. The students look like they were just at the mall and decided to come do a show. But I think the concept is kind of interesting. Although, the whole thing is about a French revolution, so not sure how that works.

Yeah, I was expecting to find the whole thing off-putting, and it wasn't. I don't know (esp w/o seeing it obv) if it's, like, "justified," but it doesn't look too icky.

Sharp has developed a method to ruin the camcorder footage shot by pirates in movie theaters. By placing mega IR lights behind the screen (which are invisible to the human eye, of course), the light can tunnel through tiny holes that are already in screens for the passage of sound. The result is a wash of light protruding from the screen, ruining camcorder footage.
I would imagine this technology could also work in theatre. Unseen intense bright infrared light focused toward the audience from the edge of the stage and around the proscenium. The bright light going into the camera would muck everything up.

I was in the unique position to be able to see Les Mis in New York last month, and the Dallas Theater Center's "modern version" this past weekend. I enjoyed the show in Dallas. The set was fantastic, it was built on a thrust stage. The actors used the stage and audience space well. I was sitting in the front row, and at one point during Master Of The House, Mrs. Thenardier sat in my lap ... maybe not as thrilling as NPH in Hedwig pulling a patron's hair while gyrating on their face, but worthwhile nonetheless!
I think the director proved her point that good music and a good story of love, forgiveness and courage are truly timeless. I recommend you see it if you get the chance. One caveat, the Lovely Ladies scene is a bit more graphic than it is typically played, so I would recommend not bringing kids or if you do, maybe just bring a sleeping mask for them to wear over their eyes for those few minutes. There was a lot of doggy style gyrating all over the stage, including a transgender prostitute ... Fun Times!

Posted: 7/26/14 at 1:45pmI saw this last week and was quite skeptical going in....but from the moment it started I was on the edge of my seat. I've seen Les Mis MULTIPLE times on tour, broadway, etc....but I thought this performance was a revelation. There were things in the show that I noticed that I had never noticed before. It really brought an emotional punch to certain things that was different than the traditional performances. A+++ Highly recommend.

Those clips are the first time I have ever understood every single word all those people are singing.
I would totally go see that if I had the great misfortune of being in Dallas. I'd be all: "Add another miserables, plus one."

You're not ok with the modern dress but ok with a multi racial cast…which also makes zero sense. You can't have it both ways.

I am just wondering, why do you consider Sutton Ross's viewpoints to be contradictory? Colorblind casting and producing the show in a different and new way are apples and oranges. I think that Sutton was okay with the colorblind casting (after all, it's happened before with both the Broadway and West End production of the show over the years.) And yet, this is a new take on the show. For a show that is set in 1800's france, and spends a majority of its second act dealing with an actual moment in history, it may take people awhile, if at all to get used to the new visuals of the show. After all, keep in mind the fact that it feels like every production under the sun of this show has the actors in costumes that are common place for that time period. Maybe some folks are unsure of the change.

One of the director's inspirations for this production was a video she saw of demonstrators dancing the toyi-toyi during a political protest in South Africa. That movement is what you see reflected in "One Day More," though it certainly looks bizarre out of context.
A lot of how the modern concept has been integrated into the show looks really interesting, but what's with Fantine's wig? It looks like they bought it at the dollar store.
